Estate Auction

Ipswich, Massachusetts

Claw and ball footed chairs
Resting in the parlor
Hand carved fan centering
Apron faces of all eight

Magnificent museum quality
Captured in mahogany
Notched corners, stenciled edges
Circa 1770

Gallery headhunters
Suck in the stagnant air
While surveying their piracy
Easing them into the moving van

Antiquities are on the move
House sighs a sad farewell
To treasured friends
Forever removed

This piece has certainly hit a familiar chord with me. Not too long ago was the estate sale at my mother's home disposing of the treasured friends acquired through her lifetime.
Best for me was your description of the headhunters. (and they really were like vultures) Any reason for Ipswich Massachusetts?
Susan, another wonderful work.............June

I'm currently reading a novel set in 1850s England that has wonderful descriptions of a country estate that's been passed down through generations of the same family for 500 years. The furnishings and library are especially well described, and it makes you wonder if the founders didn't go a little overboard in trying to prevent too much accumulation of wealth. Luckily, some of our treasures, such as Castle Hill in Ipswich, attract committed preservationists. Thanks for a very enjoyable poem.
