The Faithless Wanderer
by Jordan Screws (Age: 21)
copyright 04-10-2008

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I am a wanderer of many lands
Looking for something important.
What is it, you would ask me?
I seek something to believe.

Everywhere I go,
Nothing is sacred anymore,
And it is much easier
Simply to believe nothing.

Where do I go
To find something to believe in
When nothing is believable
Save choosing not to believe?

Nothing makes any sense
When there is nothing
That can be found to be
Held and valued for a lifetime.

I am a wanderer of many lands
Looking for something important.
What is it, you would ask me?
I seek something to believe.

Been some time since I last commented. ^-^ You get to be my first comment in probably months!

When you say that nothing is believable, what do you mean by that? There are plenty of believable things, science, for instance. But science only tells you 'what' and not 'how'. Religion tells you 'how', so is that what you're looking for?

You know what I'd say to that. Go to Islam. I'm not saying become one, I'm just asking that you learn about it. After all, as some dead guy once said, the mark of an educated mind is the ability to entertain an idea without accepting it. If you took the time to learn the teachings of Islam, I'm pretty sure you'll find what you're looking for. I know I did. ^-^

You might just be surprised, too. Many scientists who've read the Quran have switched to Islam, because of the almost scary predictions it makes, things that only have recently been discovered, and how much sense Islam makes. I know this probably sounds conceited, but, eh... whatever...

Islam really is a cure. Best thing about it? No burnings at the stake. XD

Heeeeyyyy, somebody's in a poetic mood. :p Two poems in a mere few months! I was glad to see this one was longer, too.

Hmm, I remember that time you said you didn't have a religion but hoped to adopt one later in life--is that one of the things you were thinking of when writing this piece? I really like some of the lines and ideas in the piece, especially the part with "and it is much easier, simply to believe nothing." It's a very true sentiment; belief is a fragile thing. At any set time a person can become attached to something in someway and then if they're let down it becomes a lot more painful that it would have been if you hadn't come to trust the person or thing in question.

In other words, believing can be good and bad. It can give us solace and keep us sane sometimes but other times it can backfire. I can agree, to some degree, with Frank's evaluation of the work. It has an interesting title and thought-proving first paragraph but it builds up as it goes on and be a formidable piece. Great work!

The title tells the tale. I think. I don't often go ranting about titles, but I've been thinking of doing an article on the importance of titles, and your piece shows up. Go figure.

Back to....

The title gives this short piece not only greater meaning, but also a direction of thought to answer the question posed. This is a deceptively short write with a seemingly almost over-worked theme. But the more one reads, the more questions come to mind--fall from grace? distanced by social and moral decay? simply lost from the "greater" values we all seek? And more.

It started out, meh. Went to, hrmph. Looked at .>.>. Ended up, finally, at O.O.

The circuitous roads the mind will travel to make things meaningful.
