This Is Just to Say

A/N: Everyone has a version of this William Carlos Williams classic. This is mine.

I saw you flailing in the river
as I crossed the bridge tonight.

It was late and you called out;
but I was in a hurry
and had no time to chat.

I suppose you had your reasons
for being out
on such a dismal night.

I was off to Mario’s
for dinner with a friend
who’s having a rough time.

We dined on roasted fowl
with cake and cognac for dessert –
prepared by Mario himself.

Later, she kissed me on the cheek
and caught a cab;
I headed back across the bridge and home.

I looked for you, but you were gone by then.
I stepped on glass
and wondered what it was you tried to say.

Forgive me;
but dinner was delicious,
and the water looked so cold.

I have taken the phrases in this poem
I thought them very well written
Forgive me I needed some homework to turn in
Tomorrow for English Lit^_~

I liked your poem very much. It certainly was a good idea and written in such a way that one could easily understand-
so much for human nature!?

Good work.
Keep them coming,

Rich

If a connection is made between Williams' opening and closing stanzas being supported by the conflict of the enclosed material, to your opening and closing stanzas as having the same relative value, then the enclosed and supporting material also obtains meaning.

Yours, however, paints a much more grisly rationale for human behavior. Perhaps.

What I did find interesting was that aside from the imagery and development, your offering almost requires the reader to maintain concentration on two levels to achieve maximum emotional impact: the image of the person in the river and the image of the true hedonist who couldn't be delayed.

An interesting write! ^^

Frank :)

THIS IS JUST TO SAY, by William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

One author takes another in concept and creates touch of class, so well written and crafted, you captured the moment and the intent, this was precious, a true joy to read.. Walt
