The New World
(Deleted)
by Mike Gallimore (Age: 58)
copyright 04-23-2008

Age Rating: 16 to 127

I heard you tumble from your chair
as you ate your eggs this morning.
I was having coffee on the deck.

I began to put the paper down,
and dial nine-one-one;
then I stopped.

A humming bird hovered at the feeder;
and dew glistened on the lawn
that I cut yesterday.

You made some little sounds
as you lay on the linoleum;
then you stopped.

I finished the op-ed,
and listened to Dvořák’s English horn
herald the New World.

I brought my dishes in
and found you lying there;
I’m afraid your eggs had gotten cold.

Forgive me.
I heard you tumble from your chair,
but a new world beckoned me.

I think the Marquis de Sade would have approved this write. Possibly Poe would have seen some merit. Certainly, on a more contemporary level, Stein and even King would find enough substance in this piece to perhaps generate a larger work or even a film.
It seems, however, to lack the spark of humanity that is found in most works trending towards sadistic and appallingly hedonistic attitudes, that offer the contrast to achieve maximum emotional impact. For some odd reasons that I've not fully defined, this piece brings to mind the attitudes of the Maya and Inca civilizations as well as the attitudes of Genghis Khan, Alexander, Napoleon, the Pharaohs, and so on.
The best review that I can offer is to note that as with other models of this type, the opening presents a dramatic scene, well described. The content is compelling because of the cold contrast to the opening, and it does come full circle with a closing that is appropriate to the theme. The development is adequate to accomplish the visions of, again, as with your other work, a bi-level awareness. The imagery, rhythm, choice of words, grammar, punctuation, and the mechanics of other things poetic and literary, were sufficient unto the task you set yourself to produce this write. The texture was interesting and gave us a well-woven, if disturbing, tapestry of the ultimate vision of selfishness.
Because you asked: yes, there is a lot of raw material in the world that writers and poets and artists, and all creative people can use for inspiration and even further development. After all, it is recognized that we are all plagiarists of one kind or another. The only real consideration there, is that we ourselves, through the manipulation and experimentation of others' works, will often provide that same raw material for others.
I didn't note the age carefully enough to remember where it was set. If it was set for lower than 16, you may want to consider re-setting it.

Frank :)
