When all that's seen is known
How can we know what's left?
Have we truly seen it all
Or only what we could or wanted?
I am but a simple man,
Not given to deep thoughts.
Why, then, do these thoughts
Plague me so, and often?
And even if the veil
Were swept aside,
What good and for who the good,
If any?
It has been said by Saint and Sage
And Sinner, too, the walk across
The River Styx has yet to come.
Should we, then, desire to arise
Like Phoenix in the dawn of day
And fall as shadow in eve of night?
For look you now, upon a thing
Of mystery and delight to some,
That even Tut with all his wealth
Still was he found, his godly wishes
Gone, like dust upon the desert
Once a mighty mountain grand.
Is that our fate, our true end,
To be here for a bit, like a figure
On an ancient stage does play a role
With nary his own voice to tell the tale
But acting out a role from Zeus
And to be poorly played at that?
I am but a simple man,
Not given to deep thoughts.
Why, then, do these thoughts
Plague me so, and often?
Did you see the rose in bloom,
Each petal, precious, gentle curls,
Unfolding softly to greet the sun
And offer up its gifts of scent and sight?
It knows whereof it comes and, knowing,
Knows whereto it goes. With no complaint
Or heroic spectacle, it simply waits, its
Turn of beauty to be seen and known.
Did you see the Seeker of the Truth
Pass by and see the rose, wonder of its
Wonders, and wondering, would make it share
Its Secrets of its journey.
The rose gave up its secrets, as petal by
Grim petal, the stem was bared.
The petals lie upon the ground like
Dust was once a mountain high, its beauty
Gone, and that which caused the Seeker pause,
Stayed not his ever-curious hand until
He had but useless, lifeless petals and a
Stem with only thorns for the unwary.
This, then, was the rose revealed, its
Secrets still held tight.
