On its pad stood the shuttle a marvel of man
Its elegant presence a breathtaking sight
Perched on the shore of the Indian River
Greeted by egrets in fanciful flight
Across the grand river, crowds assembled
Lawn chairs, blankets, hot dogs, hot tea
Camped for hours, a tailgating frenzy
T-shirts ten dollars, buy two get one free
Throughout the nation schoolchildren gathered
Excitedly watching the classroom TV
Astronauts ready, a teacher among them
Her family at launch site, how proud they must be
Lift-off commenced, "roger, go at throttle up"
Despite the cold, accomplished perfectly
A beautiful launch.....but wait, oh God
The craft's breaking-up, it's falling to sea.
In destruction's wake, the silent pall
Shock, disbelief, utter despair
Witnessed by all the tragic face
