Tomorrow Like a Toy
by Wayne Thomas (Age: 58)
copyright 04-30-2008

Age Rating: 13 to 127

(for Ray Bradbury)

I through a child's eyes have dreamed
and with a child's hands have stolen
hard green apples from a neighbor's tree.
And barefoot through clover meadow,
two of us, boys together,
ran to our hidden sanctuary
and gorged ourselves green,
wonderfully sick,
aching bellies satisfied with pain--
and fruit--with such a joy as only boys can know.

And there were girls,
the silly fluttered hearts
we at once despise and worship,
first longing for a simple kiss,
or forcing one--on a willing lass,
or praying, on a windy autumn day,
to catch a glimpse of nyloned thigh
brought silver-plattered to our boyish gaze
by gracious, skirt-lifting wind.
And now and then we got an answer.

I shall not peer through an old man's eyes,
instead I see the boy-me, young forever,
downhill yelling, run-jump-skipping
knee-deep in the wind-combed grass,
bandaid peeling from yesterday-skinned knee,
and thus I clutch tomorrow like a toy!

For me, it's real easy to mix the male voices up at PnP up when reading, as their work, although different in their personal styles, at times connects, like a group of close friends getting together for a lively debate.

Almost like a battle of the wits, with English Masters in the sport, taking turns at the podium.

Sometimes Wayne, you catch me totally off guard and I miss the meaning in your work as it can get a little tricky for me, to follow.

This time...I hear the best-friend boy theme running, throughout the story. The youth in the man doing the talking. Very nice!

It is indeed very reminiscent of Dandelion Wine. I think he would have appreciated your offering. Certainly the rest of should, as do I.
And as he so often caught the soul of man or boy or girl or woman, from their youth throughout, so have you.

Thank you, Walt! ^^
