Generosity is something a lot of people believe is dead, and with good reason. Today's society encourages an avaricious and materialistic lifestyle that can perhaps be summarized by a quote from the movie Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl . In it, Captain Jack Sparrow and a fellow pirate say "Take everything you can, give nothing back!" as a mantra of their trade. I find this to be typical of society nowadays, but one instance did a little to change that view and show that there are still decent people willing to help those in need.
This moment came in November of 2005, when I was still a new member of PnP. My dues had come due and I was unable to pay, so I drifted in limbo for awhile. I was trying to figure out how I could pay as December approached. My early works were more successful than I had anticipated, but being unable to pay my dues, I was restricted to reading instead of writing. Then came the night of December 4th.
I was checking my Yahoo e-mail account to see if anything aside from the normal spam had been sent my way when I happened to see one from PnP. The headline read "You have been sponsored!" Eager to find out who had done this good turn, I opened it and read. In my excitement, I attributed it to Robert Betts, a man who I had heard was famous for such charitable works. I charged into the chat room to thank him for sponsoring me, but he said it was not he who did it. Both of us were puzzled as to the identity of my sponsor, and my answer would not come until a short while later.
One night later in December, I re-read that glorious e-mail both to cherish it and possibly find out who my benefactor was. After a minute of careful reading, I ascertained who they were. It was Writer Sammy A. who had sponsored me! When I entered the chat room that night, I thanked her for her sponsorship. Without it, it probably would have taken me longer to reach the heights I have today.
For a complete stranger younger than myself to sponsor me was entirely unexpected. I felt somewhat of a shift in my previously held attitude of man as an avaricious creature capable of working only for his own gain. This seemingly trivial act of kindness rekindled a bit of my faith in humanity by showing me that kind people still existed in the world. Since that time, Sammy and I have gotten along quite well and routinely meet in chat (which I serve as a monitor by extension of my Director status). I have much to thank her for.
By sponsoring me, she allowed me to continue my writing here on PnP. I doubt that I would have progressed as fast as I have if it were not for her timely charitable deed. Also, by meeting her I have found an interesting friend who helps bring cheer and happiness to chat. Most of all, she is an example of what a small act of generosity can do for a person. For that I am eternally thankful to Sammy A.
