Author's Note
This was some correspondence of mine with a young, graphic artist friend, whom I've known for a few years. I thought it was worth sharing. It hasn't been edited (lol) except to remove personally identifiable information and to correct one or two of my own grammatical errors. I hope that you find it helpful, also. ^^

"I just wanted to let you know, separately, that I liked all your (work). And I wanted to thank you for all the hard work and creative effort you've given (site) so far. Without your kind of contribution, the place wouldn't be as unique as it is. srsly. *heart*"
Friend:
"thanks. just lately it seems like i'm doing a lot of crud for nothing....all i get in return is people complaining that my work isn't good enough, or doesn't look right. or whatever."
Frank:
"I know that the hardest thing for any artist--visual, performing, literary, or graphic--to accept is criticism. I also know that all of us go through "dark periods." And more often than not, those emotions are transferred into our art.
I know, also, that it's not possible to be "happy" and smiling all the time. The world doesn't work that way, does it? Rhetorical question, there. ^^
Point is, if enough people say pretty much the same thing about any given work, the artist can recognize that's how the world is seeing it. The world doesn't know how long something took, how difficult it was, how much attention was paid to crafting the details that satisfied the artist, etc. None of those things. The world is a selfish and a greedy mistress that wants everything its own way, when it wants it, and wants to see everything through it's own eyes, and to hell with the artist.
The artist has to rise above all that. You have to know you're good enough and that your work has value and meaning beyond what the world can see.
You also need to be able to accept criticism, and edit your works. Or not. That final choice always remains the artist's. You can withhold your beauty from the world or share it. And if the immediate sharing isn't offered gold and silver, you can change it or not, or create something new. That, also, will be the artist's final choice.
One thing, sure. The artist will always either be supported by the world, or destroyed by it.
It's all in your control, sugar. Really.
Bottom line, here? All your works are being used! That should tell you something beyond what the critics say. Including me. ^^
*hugs*"
