A Great Comeback

  A Great Comeback

A moment captured in a single frame,
Igniting a passionate hopeful flame.
The comeback of a great majestic bird,
From where total disaster almost occurred.

It has been a long fight for revival,
Reaching strong numbers, ensuring survival.
DDT was the cause of near extinction,
Almost killing off a bird of much distinction.

Man introduced the pesticide happily grinning,
It was to keep the insects from winning.
Later we learned that it had horrid effects,
On both human and animal subjects.

After being used freely, as it was legal,
It affected the eggshells of the Eagle.
The weight of the brooding adult as it sat,
Would cause all the eggs to become flat.

A ban was put into effect in nineteen seventy-two,
It has been forty years while their numbers grew.
From four hundred twelve nesting pairs,
One hundred twenty thousand now fly our airs.

Author Notes
The bald eagle has been removed from the endangered and threatened species list as of 2007. It has come back to a number where it is no longer considered threatened. In part thanks to the banning of DDT and other chemicals that affected its ability to hatch its eggs. It is still a protected bird.

I agree with Arthur, your poem was as majestic as the bird. Beautifully written.
"Man introduced the pesticide happily grinning,
It was to keep the insects from winning.
Later we learned that it had horrid effects,
On both human and animal subjects." How true this is and so nicely put.

Great job,
Regina

I am familiar with the eagle as we have numbers of this majestic bird in our area. Your poem was as majestic as the bird. How wonderfully you manipulate the language to present a living, breathing , soaring phantom of flight and beauty.
It is exceptional.
Arthur, who used to be king
