The Battle of the Sages

by Arthur G. Finch (Age: 80)
copyright 09-11-2008

Age Rating: 13 +

Folks rush to judgment and cultures collide,

Men contend in public, people decide.

Show us in the ring, came the loudest shout.

Of course a contest will remove all doubt,

Those who speculate hit upon this scheme,

Battle of Sages, their ultimate dream.

Someone suggested Buddha and Jesus,

Did not take long, it was the consensus.

Is it possible to arrange that tryst?

A card between Buddha and Jesus Christ?

Two men through the ages who fostered peace,

Would engage in fisticuff, let peace cease?

The battles they waged, always in the heart,

Confusing us all, will it really start?

Yet, they both agreed to face each other,

And suddenly embraced as a brother.

As quickly as lightning the news went out,

On this day there would be no boxing bout.

But lessons of service, God’s divine love,

The greatest examples, love, from above.

Would that your words could become but a reality. Perhaps. A battle between Buddha and Jesus? Some would argue that Jesus, though given human form, was not a man. All that to one side, however, I'm not too sure that battle isn't actually in progress today and has been for many, many years. Ideologies are most difficult things to change.

Well written and thought-provoking.

Thank you! ^_^

Frank :)
