Arms Around Your Waist

by Vanessa Anderson (Age: 37)

My arms around your waist,
We raced, like young fools,
With nothing to lose through
The tall grass and rocks,
Engine revving,
4-wheeler going with the sun on our backs,
Dogs at our sides…
Your smile, and my laughter.
You’ve shown me freedom!

We know no fear or care
And dare the world to try!
Your hand holding mine,
You slow to a stop,
Turn in the seat,
Touch my face with your strong hands,
And I melt like new snow at first light in
Your palm as you kiss me…
You’ve shown me love!

My words fail me as
Your arms are around my waist!
My heart pausing to skip beats
Then races to catch up…
The butterflies in my soul are floating free..
Oh, how weak you make me
As I close my eyes and sink
With delight in your embrace!

Time, please stop! Stand still.
Let me be this way forever in
Warm sunshine,
You and I.

You’ve shown me hope!

You and I…

I wrote this for my husband Matt. We were just dating at the time. He found me at a time in my life when I was a "bird with broken wings". He describes loving me at times to be akin to loving a porcupine;) But, we survived!!

Vanessa, I have read a few of your poems this morning and very much enjoy your style. Your poems capture the reader with clear and poignant images. In this lovely piece I particularly like the idea of the heart pausing then racing to catch up, nice way to play with time. (though perhaps verbs should match - pauses, races; or pausing, racing). But, very nicely done all in all, thanks for sharing. June
