It was for her sake and their sake
That she stayed home alone
He knew she would cry
He could hear her slight moan

No libation tonight
They agreed with a smile
The first one will bite
But only awhile

He thought she was safe
At home with her book
He knew she was dry
And bought wine just to cook

The reception was nice
Everyone happy - all so kind
One could smell laughter a mile away
Not too much amusing he had opined

Ample by liquor
And alive the party
Most waxed elegant
Nearly everyone refined and hearty

Honeysuckle scent
Filled the grand hall
He knew it was her
She had come after all

Like a reptile sans tail
She appeared where she should have not
To her nothing inhibited
All watched her gavotte

He asked her for the very next dance
When she nearly took a fall
She feigned to be tee-totaled
And made fools of them all

This was the last straw
He said to his heart
He let her stalk by
For he knew they would part

She snickered in his face
Alleged he was remiss
But he took her slight hand
And he gave it a kiss

Gauche as she acted
She began to doze
He walked to the exit
And clasped his red rose

When out on the street
The rose fell to his feet

Wonderfully and eloquently written.Within every verse that I read through it placed me at that moment in time in which the people had their experience. This effect within the movements of the poem were very pleasant. The descriptiveness was impeccable and lofty in a nice manner that showed that the people in writ were of the recherche' and not of the rabble.Sincerely,Eric

A social grace, a mix of eyes peeking, voice clear, love a drop in wax, form please to eyes and mind, a truth too real to pass, at his passing of the glass, a perfect performance, rose in the street... more than well done, excellent write... Walt

Alan - a very nice but sad poem about a loved one who just can't or doesn't want to stop, and just how much is too much from the other person's point of view. I've often wondered what is so difficult about limiting drink to the occasional social one - that is until someone gives me a box of chocolate - then I get it.
I enjoyed this. June
