Killing Heart
by Beverley McInnis
copyright 11-06-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Summer night
Watermelon in one hand
Lemonade in the other
Night breeze blows
Rocking the patio swing

Quiet settles over me
A symphony of nature begins
In the distance I hear
A wolf in full outfit

Screaming, screaming
Where has it come?
Turn!
Look!
Run!

I smell fright on night air
I sense terror within
Painful arrow shooting
My heart breaks

A knife turns slowly
Gleams silently
Moonlight bounces with evil intent
I wash my hands
And drink my lemonade

Thank you everyone!

Thought-provoking to be sure. Interesting, but black. Thanks for reading my "Dumb Animals" article. Justin is a thorn in my side, but he's a big beautiful dog with hard feet, and I love him to bits. BTW: Riding horses is now sanctioned (even encouraged) by my surgeon, so "I'm back in the saddle again.." - legally. Bunny

Excellent. I can feel your words.

WOW! Now I have something to think about, great work.

Great work! I liked how you managed to add the plot of murder into the poem. It was pretty cool.

Thanks for reading this! I'll email John and Jackie about what it's about. I'm interested to hear what others think too. It's definitely an abstract, as stated in the last comment. (sorry, I really should know who you are because of the comments made in this and other poems....but the name escapes me)

But its also about something very specific. Its really there, simply hiding. But then....doesn't murder usually hide?

I loved the mood and the imagery. Like many poems I write, this one seems to be more an abstract word painting that is designed to convey emotions more than a precise meaning. Whatever the motivation, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks for sharing.

Great write, Bev, but I'm with John, I didn't get it, either. At first I thought you were talking about Indian attacks, that's the way that they used to do it, simulate an animal, as a signal to one another, then attack, but when I read the end, I wasn't so sure. It's a good write, though. It's making me think some. Jackie

It is not that time of the month is it Bev! Lol, sorry I could not resist the joke. This was a strange one indeed Bev and for once I admit that I have not got the slightest inclination as to what this is about. There, I said it, I quickly had another five reads just to make sure that I was sure and the answer is just the same. Then again, could this be how it is so easy to be in one particular mood, enjoying yourself quite happily, then suddenly, without warning, the mood changes? Or then again, perhaps this is about a schitzophrenic, (Hell, I can never spell that one.) whatever it was it is an interesting read that provokes quite a bit of thought.
