“Mary-Anne, I’m not going to leave,” Officer Harris stated, “This time there is no turning back. You’re almost there. It’s time to let go.”
“Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, baa baa black sheep, oh where oh where has my little dog gone?” Mary-Anne sang, rocking back and forth, refusing to acknowledge anyone.
“Maybe we should call her doctor?” asked Maggie, “We can’t continue if it upsets her so much.”
Officer Harris continued, “Mary-Anne! It’s time. Get up off the floor and tell me what really happened. Now!”
Mary-Anne’s head shot up at the sharpness of words. She glared at the officer as she rocked faster.
“Ol’ King Cole was a merry old soul and a merry ol’ soul was he, rock a bye baby on the treetop” Mary-Anne continued to sing at the top of her lungs.
“Stop! This is enough! Make him stop Richard!” Lisa cried out.
“Officer Harris, I think we’ve pushed her far enough,” Robert stated, “We need to ….”
“Do you trust me?” Officer Harris stated, cutting Robert off mid-sentence, “If you do, let me do my job.”
He got down on the floor beside Mary-Anne. Slapping his hands hard together, he stated, “Mary-Anne! It’s time for the games to end!”
Mary-Anne jumped and continued to sing.
“So how did you kill her, Mary-Anne? Did you throw her over a cliff? Poison her coffee? Drive her car and smash it over her?”
Mary-Anne continued to ignore him.
“Inside you are scared. Terrified. Something happened that really scared the hell out of you and you buried it deep. So deep you forgot it for a long time. But it never really let you forget, did it. Remember you said that sometimes your dad lied so much even you got mixed up what was truth and what was lies?”
Mary-Anne stopped rocking.
“Is this one of those times? Because I see before me a very strong young lady who is packing a whole lot of guilt that isn’t hers. I see before me a very frightened little girl who just wants to run away and hide. But trust me, Mary-Anne, even though the truth hurts so much now, it will be a relief to let it go. And you are safe. You weren't then. You are now.”
Mary-Anne stopped singing.
“Trust me, Mary-Anne. I won’t let him hurt you anymore.”
With that final statement, Mary-Anne burst into tears.
“Do you promise? Pinky swear?”
“Pinky swear, I promise. He will not hurt you anymore.”
“But what if its true and I did kill her? What then?”
“We’ll deal with that one step at a time,” Officer Harris replied, “You were a child, he was the adult. He knew better. Whatever you did, he knew better. You were his child and he was supposed to protect you, not hurt you. Nor hurt anyone else.”
“Yeah” Mary-Anne replied quietly, “yeah, that’s right.”
She wiped away her tears, then drank down the water offered to her by Maggie. She took her seat back on the chair and looked up at Officer Harris.
“OK, I’m ready.”
