Under The Tree

One Christmas gift under the tree
All nicely wrapped for us to see
Left with love from his heart
He knows soon, he must part

We put our tree up for the year,
Under the tree Paul’s gift was there
All wrapped and sealed, neatly tied
I looked at it and softly cried

Paul can't tell us he wont be here
His eyes might show a faltered tear
He hoped he wouldn't have to leave
So he could be home Christmas eve

We knew Paul may be gone one day
And heard he is now on his way
Paul's heartfelt love I know is tore
Since he was shipped off to the war

We’ll wait Paul till you comes back
Before we open all gifts stacked
Here by the phone in hopes you call
We wait to hear your voice, dear Paul

A Christmas gift under the tree
The gift of love you left for me
Under the tree here on the floor
Waits your return from the war

This is a deeply moving poem, and although expressed in very simple words, its message still remains profound. I like the opening lines introducing the presence of the "gift" and the closing lines still focused on that, but with a final hopeful resolve for the "giver" of it. Beuatiful arrangement.
