They all looked around and saw the address where Philippe had led them. The house was tall, wide, and massive. Judging from the appearance of it, Lucien knew it must have had a long history. Just the perfect place for a vampire, he thought, remembering what it used to be like for him.
Philippe turned to Lucien and frowned, completely puzzled. It seemed to him that Lucien knew all what it was like to be a night creature. If so, how on earth could that be? He could never have been a vampire . . . could he? Even so, how? There was no way that a vampire could transform back to human. Or could there?
Philippe shook the crazy thought away. He didn’t want his hopes of such a foolish thought get in the way of his task at hand.
“Well, how shall we do this?” Lucien asked nervously. “Shall we travel in groups, or shall we do this together?”
“You all can just back me up,” Philippe said. “He’s mine.”
Charlotte frowned at him. “Are you just being macho or what? We’re all in this together!”
“Yes, yes, I know. But this is personal.”
“I know why you say, that, Philippe, but Charlotte has a point,” Kaitlin said. “We decided to fight him together, so we should all do this as a unit. Besides, you’re not the only one who has a personal dealing with him.”
Philippe was silent for a moment before he slowly nodded. “Alright, then. Let’s go.”

Damon looked out the window and smiled in delight as he watched all three of his rivals plus another woman named Jane Brown step out of Lucien’s vehicle from outside. Wonderful—everything was moving along according to plan.
Soon, both Lucien and Philippe would pay for their transgressions. Better yet, he would finally be able to make Charlotte his, and give her the taste of eternal life—the very pleasure that Philippe had denied her.
That alone, would be a pleasant punishment for Philippe to endure before his death.
* * *
They all looked around the house, almost in awe of their surroundings. Even Philippe was impressed with the house that Damon had acquired for himself; the house appeared to be just as large and wide as it did on the outside.
He must be quite wealthy, Philippe thought.
“So, Philippe,” Jane said, her voice calm, yet serious, “you know him better than all of us put together. Where would be the first place to look?”
“Why, right behind you, of course.”
Quickly, all of them turned. Sure enough, Damon stood behind them, a malicious grin on his face.
Jane and Charlotte were the only two people who were truly stunned at the resemblance between Lucien and Damon as the others were quite used to the physical likeness between the two men by now. If neither woman didn’t know better, it would have been like looking at a set of twins—except for Lucien’s arms, which were covered with scars.
Philippe glared at Damon, automatically stepping in front of his minions in a protective manner. “Remember what I told you in that dream, Damon. Your vengeance lies with me. If you want it, then fight for it, but do so with me.”
Damon stared at Philippe for a long moment before he burst out laughing. “Oh, my goodness! After these past few days, and you still don’t know? Why, I thought you would have read his thoughts about it by now!”
“About what?”
Lucien stared at Philippe in a confused manner. Philippe would have known how to read his thoughts! How could he not have known?
Damon smiled. “Your dear friend Lucien, here, was also a vampire. The main reason why he’s a mortal now is because he destroyed Mariam. THAT is why I wish to destroy the BOTH of you.”
Philippe turned to study Lucien, a look of shock on his face. “You . . . you . . .”
Lucien frowned. “I thought you knew.”
“I’m not all that privy to your mind, if that’s what you thought!”
“Look out!” Kaitlin shouted.
Philippe quickly turned around as Damon had transformed into a wolf and lunged at him. Philippe had lifted his arm to defend himself, only so that the wolf would bite his arm.
Jane then grabbed the vial of Holy water, which she kept in her pocket and splashed it onto the wolf, which howled in pain before it jumped off of Philippe. She breathed a sigh of relief until the wolf turned around and started to focus on her.
“NO!” Philippe shouted as he ran after the wolf.
But it was already too late.
The wolf had already attacked Jane, biting her throat before she had struggled to grab a crucifix and pressed it between the wolf’s ears.
Howling, the wolf yelped and ran before it transformed into a bat and flew away. No one managed to stop it in time.
“Jane!” Kaitlin shouted before she ran to her friend’s side.
Kaitlin was holding Jane in her arms, who was now covered in blood. She was making a dying effort to speak. “Kill him . . . before he gets . . . to Charlotte . . .”
Then her eyes rolled back as she died. Kaitlin could only sob uncontrollably.
