Silent Heart
by Beverley McInnis
copyright 11-29-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

music plays on
in the small country church
ears not hearing
soft sad tunes
strained

a sunset rages
for no eyes to see
settling down for its
final
farewell

bitter-sweet wine waits
for no lips to taste
offering a memory
unwanted

a hand reaches
for no one to touch
grasping for someone
who’s not there

a heart beats no longer
for love
unfeeling
cold
distant

Thank you Farrah. It means much to an author when a reader is emotionally moved by the words written. I appreciate what you said about this poem.

As sad as this poem is I very much enjoyed it as the finely crafted and beautiful creation (and tribute) that it is. It also made me reflect on similar tragic losses... I think a poem is truely special when it makes you ponder beyond the words.

~Bev~ I am so saddened by your loss long ago, I can relate to this one well. I know the feelings of your poem and imagine that many others do too.

A good one, you write your best work when it is like this.

Thank you Robert. It is hard when someone you know, when you are a teen, dies in high school and sorry to hear that you experienced this also.

We had a terrible "record" for drinking/driving deaths at grad, in our school. It was really sad.

As for the music, I recall sitting in the church and wondering why the sad organ music. In my mind, I knew it was for his parents and grandparents...but all I could think of was how he'd be really angry at this sad music. He'd want KISS and Sweeny Todd and Eagles to be played! And maybe even a bit of ACDC! ~laughing~

Funny the things one thinks of during these hard times. Guess its just the minds way of dealing with grief.

Thank you Jackie and Sunny.

Sunny, all tears are is God's way of washing out your eyeballs and your heart, from the inside out. **g** I used to tell my stepdaughter that all the time.

Jackie, he was far too young. They were just being stupid, goofing around and it was a mistake no one could take back. His parents were our teachers....so I think it must have been even harder for them, having to return to school in the fall without him being there. We placed a candle in the centre of the table at grad ceremonies to symbolize his passing and to remember him. It burned for the entire ceremony.

Beautifully done, Bev. I'm sorry about your friend. That's a horrible time of life to die. Jackie
