This is for my daughter, Jessica.
1) She has a copy of the “Cowboy’s Rules for Life” posted on her wall and holds it in as high regard as she does the Bible.
2) You know she’s going to the bathroom when she takes her spurs off.
3) She knows all about Baxter Black, DVM but has no clue who Dr. Suess is.
4) She rides her bike around with a wagon attached to it so that she can take the dog for a ride in the “pick up”.
5) She’s teaching her fourth grade teacher how to rope and ride, and she’s getting extra credit for that.
6) She’s competed in more rodeos before the age of five than most people attend in their entire lifetimes.
7) Her favorite books are “Foundation Sires of the American Quarter Horse” and anything in the “Hank the Cowdog” series.
8) At age ten, she can lay a decent brand on a calf, doctor a horse and halter break a colt, probably all in one day.
9) Her talk of current events include: ranch management, saving the Black Tailed Prairie Dog and the changes in brand laws, but she has no clue what the new Harry Potter movie is about.
10) She knows all the words to “Big Balls in Cowtown” but is having trouble with “Silent Night”.
Kids are really funny. They follow their parents around from the time they’re born and just watch us, then when they grow up to be just like us, we wonder why. In my opinion, I could have done a heck of a lot worse raising a daughter.
Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys,
Don’t let them pick guitars and drive them old trucks,
Make ‘em be doctors and lawyers and such.
Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys,
They’ll never stay home, and they’re always alone,
Even with someone they love.
- “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings

Thanks, Bunny. Jess is quite the cowboy already. She rides better than a lot of folks that are much older than her, course she has a good horse, too. He's teaching her a lot. She's a great kid, and I think that she'll probably grow up to be a ranch mom. Even with it's downfalls, it's a good thing. Jackie
Too true, and how I wish my mom was a rancher!! I have learned a lot in the past 10 years about horses and dogs...but the 37 years "wasted" not being where I should be....Great write, Jackie! Bunny
Hi, that was a great little story. I enjoyed reading it. Sounds like you and your daughter have a lot of fun. Take care, and thanks for commenting on my work.

You know, Nan, I guess that I'm going to be doing the Cowhand's Dictionary here pretty soon. I've got more requests to get than on here! O.K., if I can't get it organized myself, I'll sure be sending it your way! Oh, no problem with Jess being a cowhand, that's just the only song that came to mind, it's one of my favorites, too. Jackie
Jackie, you can alphabetize automatically using excel or i think even using tables in Word.... HINT HINT. I will even figure it out for you if you need me to. :-))) And this is a really funnny one, too. And I love that song. It gets top volume on the car radio. Course if the Momma already *is* a cowboy herself, then there';s not a problem,is there? *g*
I'm not sure how great a parent I am, Paulette. Poor Jess just kinda gets drug behind, but that's how she's learned to be responsible, I guess. Laurie, a lot of what I write is rather hard to understand. It's not an easy read by any stretch, one of these days, I'm still promising to get the Cowhand's Dictionary on here, but I have to alphabetize the thing, and I'm just not that organized. Jackie
Oh my gosh, what a read!!! with everything else you are, you are also a wonderful mother, I'm jealous!!! I can just picture this little person, called your own, doing all these things...just one more thing I know you're great at...your words are inspiring...bravo.
Paulette
I'm thinking that I'm going to put a border around it and put it in her Christmas card. She'll probably like that. She's awful ranchy. She's a lot of fun, though. Jackie
Jackie, I LOVE this! You really should print it out onto real rancy paper and frame it for the wall. I think it's great! What a wonderful life your daughter leads. The kids I work with dream of having this type of life. You sure have much to be proud of...and Jessica has a great life. Sounds like she's a very cool kid!
I'm glad that you liked it, Robert. I got to thinking that I hadn't a clue why Jess was so ranchy, then it occurred to me that I had be dragging her everywhere with me since she was born. LOL Jackie
Oh, maybe a little pride, Bob, just a little. She didn't fall too far from the tree. Drives her dad nuts. Betty, I grew up on a fairly decent sized cattle ranch in southern Colorado. We raised horses also and so I've been around ranches all my life. Now, my daughter is following me. It's O.K., I'm sure she'd rather be out here than anywhere else. She tells me that whenever she comes back from a weekend with Dad. Jackie
When I was a teenager I saw a movie where the romantic interest was named "Spurs", I thought that was so neat.
I love Baxter Black! but I grew up in the city, taught my sister Bunny to love horses, bought her some lovely horse statuettes when I travelled to Banff, Alberta. You girls get to do all the hard work though, that is really something, but we can tell you love it!
Do I detect just the slightest wee bit of pride here? And justifiably so, I'm sure. She sounds like a natural. They say the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree... Nice job, Mom.
