Radio

Driving a car is fun. It takes you wherever you want to go and doesn't matter when you want to go. It is also equipped in many gadgets that make your trip comfortable. The most common thing installed in almost every vehicle is a radio. You may turn it on when you want to listen to it and turn it off when it is disturbing your thoughts.

Before I came to America I didn't have a car so I didn't have a radio in it. But I had a radio at home. It was a pleasure to listen to it. There were only three stations on it but each of them had a great variety of programs that I could listen to for the whole day if I had time. There was always something interesting on and I remember being almost glued to it anxiously awaiting for the news, music, interviews and what not. All of those three stations were good. There was no competition between them. None of them never said that it was the best or the music it played was the best and you couldn't find it anywhere else. The news was interesting and from all over the world. I knew what was going on in my country and what happened abroad not only in our neighboring countries but in Asia, Africa, America...

When there was something on about sport it didn't matter that it had happened in Ethiopia, Great Britain or Argentina. I was informed about all the important events that had taken place on those sports arenas.
The world of music would satisfy the most fastidious desire of music fans. I knew what people were singing and listening to in Hungary, France, Italy, Brazil or Japan. I knew what symphony was the best, what opera was worth to see and who the great composers were.

And one day I came to America looking for a brighter future. I have found it because almost all of those who had come here found a better place to live. After a few years of struggle I was able to buy a car. Not only a car but a car with a radio in it.

Driving is fun. I can go wherever I want to go and whenever I want to go. I may listen to the radio whenever I am bored and I may turn it off when I have more important things on my mind. But despite of having a radio in my car I feel like something was taken from me. There are a lot of radio stations I may listen to but I constantly punch the button hoping to find a station that would catch my attention. So I punch, punch, punch...

Madona - I like her songs. Phil Collins - I like him too. N Sinc - good harmony... Commercial - The best transmission mechanic is on Main Street. Punch... Somebody assures me that he will play the best music of 70ties, 80ties and 90ties. Phil Collins - I have already heard that song. Madona - nothing new... punch. Yesterdays favorites and todays hits - N Sinc - I have already heard that song. Punch...

News. There was a shooting somewhere. Two people dead. Stock market went down today. Rain is coming. The best clothes you can buy at the new opened store. Restaurant near the railway station is serving the best meal... Punch. Rolling Stones - good hit. The Beatles - I like them but too much is too much. Madona - I have already heard that song. Punch, punch, punch...

I turned off the radio and lost myself in thoughts. What's going on here? Aren't people sick of listening to the same singers and songs on and on? Wouldn't it be nice if people from Oregon, Virginia, New Mexico or Rhode Island knew that there are other countries in the world and they have their music, singers, composers? Wouldn't it be nice if people knew that somewhere in the world there is a rock group called Czerwone Gitary, that there is a singer called Charles Aznavour, that there is a composer called Verdi...?

Maybe I live in a wrong state of United States? Maybe other states play different music but I don't want to go 2000 miles to listen to another radio station. I have more than 100 stations here and all of them play... well, you know what.

So I thought that it would be a nice idea if I could sing for you. I am not a professional musician, I don't read notes, I am not a star but I play a guitar and I would like you to listen to at least one of my songs. A song sung in different language than English. A song that you will not find anywhere else but only here.

Maybe one day I will have my own radio station where people will listen to not only beautiful tunes from different parts of the world but it would be at the same time a nice lesson of geography too.

P.S. With your permission I'll send to you a MP3 file with one of my songs (sung by me, of course).

In spite of all the news we hear, we in the US are really uninformed about much of what happens in the rest of the world. I have a cousin who lived in Canada for many years. He used to get disgusted with the lack of knowledge his kin folk and friends back home had about our nearest neighbor.

The great world of radio, huh? Out where I live, you're lucky to get one station and wanna talk about . . . well, you know. My truck is full of CD's and my car is full of tapes. I'd rather listen to what I want over and over than something I don't want over and over. Jackie

Try looking for a public radio station. They play all kinds of stuff--at least the one in Philly does. I dont believe I've ever heard Phil Collins on it. Punch. Funny story. :-) No thanks on the MP3, though... I've already heard it. Punch LOLOL
