I have decided to post a story that I wrote about things that make us feel good. Everywhere we look, newspapers, television, out in the world, people seem to be talking about the same thing, tragedy, and with the media's help, it is difficult to be optimistic. They capitalize on misfortune using it as grist for the mill. We tend to become de-sensitized and develop 'tunnel' vision. There is no doubt that the recent tragedies have touched and influenced many, many lives with grief beyond description, and by no means am I trying to trivialize that in any way. And no amount of arrogance will ever allow me to think that just by watching the beauty of a sunset or seeing a rosebud bloom to fruition, that the pain will go away. I do know this, though, that being humane is an innate quality not reserved for a chosen few. Those that 'don't get it' defy all logic. Re-programming ourselves to help us look at the good around us and enlighten our senses, will make us realize that miracles still do happen, even in our bleakest, darkest hours.
What about premature babies, hanging on for dear life, incubated for months, finally getting healthy enough to go home..or, what about an article I read that stated a daily dose of small amounts of irritation raises the immune system, strengthening the body's defense..or, when I see President Bush visiting elementary school children and how they look in awe at our leader. How about when you see teenagers holding a car wash to raise money for the needy. How does it make you feel when you see Special Olympic Kids in competition, smiling, forgetting about their limitations. For me, feeling good means when I visit the nursing home where my mother used to live and have lunch with her 104 year old lady friend..or, when I have chats with the ladies there, as they continue to console me in light of my mother's passing.. or, when I drive by a church and notice a full parking lot.. or, when I drop change in the red pail for the Salvation Army.. or, when the farmer that lives behind us brings out a fresh batch of hay and I can hear the cows and Shaka, the horse, banter back and forth from excitement. It also makes me feel good to hear about a philanthropist donating an exorbitant amount of money for a needy cause, or to someone in dire need.. or, when I hear a terminally ill child has the opportunity to 'make a wish' and lives long enough to have that wish come true. I could go on and on, but one of the best feelings I have is watching my husband out at the back gate, feeding carrots to Shaka, as I remember and am thankful once again, that he has been cancer-free for 10 years.
None of us are exempt from pain, nothing is that perfect and I am not of the pretext that we should all go through life with painted-on smiles, feigning bliss. What I am saying is that we must make a small room in our heart for the good things, make ourselves aware that miracles really do happen, be thankful for what we have, and then temper the in-between.
