A Case of Abuse...
Chapter 10
by Robert Betts (Age: 61)
copyright 12-05-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Sherry took out the pot roast from last night and set it on the counter. She smiled wistfully at nothing and then sighed heavily. "Jill always loved pot roast," she whispered.

She climbed the stairs slowly and walked to the bedroom. She looked in the closet and giggled as she grabbed the bottle on the top shelf behind a shoebox of old receipts. Should I wear the gown, she thought, or would a negligee be more appropriate? Well it is an occasion... but not really formal. Naw, something simple and normal. The blue dress and flowered sweater. Tim and Sam both like them.

She went to the adjoining bathroom and applied makeup carefully. "Must look my best. They'll like that," she giggled. She checked in the mirror and carefully brushed her hair then stared thoughtfully at the strands left in the brush.

A few minutes later she sat on the edge of the bed then reached into the drawer of the nightstand.

* * * * *

When Sam came into the kitchen something caught his attention. A rose from the garden was lying on the counter. He walked over and saw the carefully prepared pot roast plate next to it. "For dinner, Hon" said the note. "Nuke it." I'm in the bedroom resting. I love you Sam, I'll always love you, very much." He picked up the rose and smelled it. I'll tell her about the job now, he decided. We'll be ok. It'll all be ok.

As he climbed the stairs, he noticed an odor he recognized and another he didn't. Fear twisted a tight knot in his throat. He knew. He knew...

"Sherry," he called.

She was hunched over a pillow on the bed. She had used the pillow to muffle the sound. Sam tiptoed over to the bed so as not to wake her though he knew she'd never wake again.

Sam sat slowly on the edge of the bed. "Sherry darling, We'll get them back, you'll see. I promise you. As he brushed the hair from her face he continued, sobbing, "The dinner is fine. Thanks. I'll fix it later. I... I love you too Honey, very, very much."

Sam noticed the note on the nightstand picked it up and read.

My Darling,
I'm sorry I just had to leave. I couldn't do this any more. We will never be the same, none of us. God will take care of it all in the end though if He can ever forgive me for this. Take care of yourself, Timmy and Jill, if they ever let you.

I Love you with all my heart and I hope I'll see you someday...

With all my Love,
Sherry

Sam dried his eyes on the bedspread, kissed Sherry's cheek then held her hand as it cooled.

Jack, the neighbor's dog barked. Sam sighed, crumbled the note and picked up the Ruger then stuffed both into his pocket. On the way to the car he stopped at his gun cabinet and picked up his Mini 14 and two fourty-round clips.
