The Other Side
Bitter winds through the valley blow,
deep snow fills the shadows fold,
ice conceals with a loving hold,
showing what fate must bestow.
My apple orchard bare and still,
shivers alone on the north of the hill.
Willows quiver in the breeze,
weeping for their fallen leaves.
Black water drifts in the stream so slow
Turning to ice, no current flows.
No more laughing water bright,
slowly submersed to winters plight.
To my cabin, endure the long night,
remembering the past by firelight.
I must wait the long winter, through,
for spring, flowers, rain, and dew.
I’ll come back you,
and of summer’s joy will write,
and if I can not hear or know,
and watch my lovely prairie grow ~
Enjoy the thrill of the summer’s day,
and think of me in December’s gray.
~
All things pass, only memories stay.
