A Gift of Love
by Maralee Gerke
copyright 12-10-2001

Age Rating: 1 to 127

A package-
The largest we had ever seen
Appeared beneath our tree,
The year that I was eight..
Wrapped in bright paper,
It dwarfed every other package..
The tag said it was for my sister and me.
We couldn't wait to open it.
Paper and ribbon torn away,
In a Christmas frenzy.
Revealing a dollhouse-
Our wishes come true.

Made with hearts and hands
Our mom and dad
Spent many pre-Christmas hours
Cutting, painting,sanding, and finishing
Tiny furniture, floors and walls.
All made with love.
A gift of their time
Given to us.
The spirit of Christmas
Made tangible
For two little girls.

Its funny that at the very time I stop to read this poem, I am building a doll house for my granddaughter. This really touched something in me Thank You! Anthony

Thanks for all the nice comments. My parents worked out of necesity as we grew up pretty poor.Their trick was that as children we never felt that way. Thanks again Maralee

Maralee, this is wonderful! It brings back memories and makes me appreciate all my parents have done for me over the years. The best presents are always the ones from the heart.

Oh, Maralee, what a great story. I remember Christmases like this. Jackie
