Inspiration 2

My mama was a patient soul,
and she tried to be my guide.
She taught me how to cook and clean,
but all I wanted to do was ride.

I followed my dad and uncle,
all over the dusty plains,
moving cattle and riding colts,
over the family’s range.

My mama got so het up,
when I’d ride up with the boys.
She wanted to raise a little girl,
one with grace and poise.

All during my 4-H years,
it was horses, cattle and dogs.
No quilts, dresses or cooking projects,
only livestock would I log.

When I entered my teenage years,
I was living for rodeo.
My poor mama just had fits.
It was hard for her to swallow.

She wasn’t prepared for the things I did,
to see her daughter a rodeo bum.
Watching me take to the road,
was more than she could fathom.

My mama watched me move up,
through a life she thought profane.
She wanted Barbie for a daughter,
but she got Calamity Jane!

Thank you John. My mom sure wanted me to turn out to be something other than what I am. I think that she finally just threw up her hands and accepted that I wasn't going to do things her way, though. Jackie

Jackie, I read this ages ago and remembered it never let me comment so I came back for another read. This was hilarious, the last stanza was WICKED!

With the way that Barbie is built she probably couldn't balance herself to do much more than Western Pleasure Walk/Trot. She's a little top heavy. Jackie

LOL! Calamity Jane! I'd like to see "rodeo Barbie"...I bet she'd only do the barrels! Bunny

Yeah, my mom wasn't much for my "cowboy ways". I loved her dearly, but that was kind of a bummer.

Ah, LOL, your mother and mine would've had a great support group going. Eh.

Thanks to you both. I'm still desperately seeking publishers, David. I'm working on it, though. My phone bill is going sky high! Jackie

The tomboys are fun folks. I wouldn't change who I am. I kinda like it that I can ride with the best and still clean up pretty nice. LOL Jackie

Thanks, Bev, I'm thinking I'll bash a legend a week. The Inspiration of the Week. This week's bashing, is a two-fer, Calamity Jane and Barbie! You lucky dogs. . . Jackie

Jackie, I laughed as I read it and really roared with laughter with the last stanza! Now that Willie Nelson song is running through my head "Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys!" Excellent poem!
