A Case of Abuse...
Chapter 11
by Robert Betts (Age: 61)
copyright 12-14-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Pine branches slapped the sides of the Ford Escort. Soon the dirt road widened as the cabin came into view. Backed into emerald pines, it sat on the edge of a small meadow bordering on Lake Crystal. Wavelets glimmered in the sun like a myriad of diamonds.

Sam reached in his pocket and pulled out the Ruger. Unnoticed, Sherry's note dropped to the floor of the car. Sam got out, opened the trunk and picked up the mini 14. He walked slowly toward the lake gazing at the greens of the surrounding fir and their distorted reflection.

Sam had inherited the log cabin from his grandfather. He and Sherry often came there on weekends to get away and reach back for solid roots.

* *

A sound brought him back from hunts with grandpa. He headed for the cabin at a faster pace. Grabbing the old wood handrail he jumped onto the porch then opened the lock.

"He's here; His car's here." crowed the deputy to Sheriff Ames. "We've got him now."

"Stop here under cover of the woods."

"Right. He's dangerous. Already killed his wife and is a pervert besides.

"You grab the shotgun. I'll use the rifle if we need to."

Two other cars came to a stop behind the Sheriff's car. Two deputies emerged from each.

Ames grabbed his bullhorn and aimed it at the cabin. "We know you're in there Sam, come out with your hands up."

Chickadees swarmed to a nearby branch and chirped. Their song was broken by an explosive crack and Deputy Harmon slumped to the ground. The next shot dropped another deputy.

"Jesus Christ!" said Ames dropping behind the car. During the next few minutes a flurry of shots were fired at the cabin and returned. Finally Sam screamed out, "I'm coming out!"

Sam stepped on the porch with hands raised, the Ruger in his right. Ames screamed, "Drop the weapon!" Sam smiled lightly then quickly brought it down. Before he could aim another fusilade errupted. Sam took one step forward and fell.

Deputy James searched Sam's car and found the note. He bought it over to Ames. "Look here Sheriff. The man didn't kill anyone. She comitted suicide."

Ames examined the note, reached in his pocket and took out his lighter. The note caught, then burst into a quick and intense flame. Ames dropped it and the charred remains quickly dissipated into inert ashes.

I thought for sure his intent was to commit suicide. I guess, in a roundabout way, he did. He just did it with a cop's gun instead of his own. And wouldn't you know, there had to be a crooked cop! This is an awesome though very sad story.
