My ScratchPad ~~ A New Feature Explained~~
by Robert Betts (Age: 62)
copyright 01-03-2002

Age Rating: 7 to 127

We now have yet another unique and (I believe) wonderful feature at MLM. You will now see a new menuchoice - My Scratchpad - I put it on the left table of contents so it will be accessible from anywhere on the site. To confess, many of the changes you see here are to make my life easier. I was running out of envelopes and pieces of cardboard to scribble my poems on. So I thought of the idea of a private area where I could, and hence you, can play.

I believe this is unique to MLM!

What is it for? You may use this area any way you like. Maybe while you're reading and commenting on works, something 'clicks' and you get an idea you'd like to develop. You can also use it for grocery list, Aunt Harriet's (and others) birthday, scribble a few choice lines which might fit into a poem or story, jot down any ideas... in short anything you like. . It's yours and private.

The originator of the spark that brought this about was Sunny. She suggested a workshop. This is a bit different than what she had in mind. Her idea was a public workshop, members only, where comments could be traded back and forth. Not bad, but I feared conjunctive writing and that this might harm individual creativity. In some ways this goes beyond... anything can be entered. It does lack the interaction but you can polish a work in your scratchpad and then post it.

Yes and it also has a link to our Rhyming dictionary, which incidentally is much more than for rhymes. After the rhymes are brought up in a separate window, if you click on any word, you will be taken to Webster's dictionary where the word is defined.

How many notes can you have? The number is basically unlimited... as many as you like. If you have thousands it could become a pain to scroll through the list. At the moment they are listed in date entered order, from newest to oldest. This can be changed if people prefer a different order such as alphabetical by title.

Also, in this area, deletion is allowed and there is a delete button to kill a note. What it ACTUALLY does is hides it so no one can see it, not even the original author. The plus of that scheme is that if you accidentally delete something of importance you can email me and I can get it back.

Security is tight. I tried and I can't break into it. Only the original author on his computer can see it. However if you have others in your household who can access the computer and log into MLM under your MemberID and Password, they could see all. So DON"T PUT ANYTHING THERE WHICH COULD CAUSE YOU A PROBLEM !! (ie Don't confess to beating children, robbing banks or being unfaithful !!)

Now a bit on use. Click on My ScratchPad and a window will open with a list of all the notes you have entered and saved. If you wish to edit (or see) one, click on it's title. Another box will open which looks a bit like the comments box. You can change the title, edit the contents or just look. If you have made any changes to the title or contents, click on the save button if you wish to save the changes. A message will appear letting you know that the changes have been saved. The list of your notes will be updated in the other box, if you haven't closed it. - If you have, the next time you call for the list by clicking on My ScratchPad, it will reappear with the contents updated.

To enter a new note, just click on the top link, "Add a Note" The other box will open and be blank. Again, you MUST save the change BEFORE you close that box or it will be lost.

Deleting, Just choose the note you wish to delete and when the box opens click on the Delete button. A message will appear letting you know it has been deleted and asking you to click to close the box.

The one thing I haven't got in the program yet is a check to be sure the title contains at least one character. Without at least one you will not be able to access the note because it have no title to click on in the list box. I'll get that fixed soon. Meanwhile just be careful to be sure the title has at least one character.

If you're reading and commenting, just click somewhere outside the My ScratchPad boxes and they will disappear behind your screen. They are still there and active, just click again on My Scratchpad and the listing box will pop to the front.

One last note If you delete something important, I can 'save your bacon.' BUT if you failed to save the note, I cannot... It never got recorded in the database so it simply doesn't exist.

If you have trouble, find bugs, let me know.

Hi Bob! Happy New Year to you! I hope that MLM continues to be a success in 02. This scratch pad idea sounds great. Now, if the muse ever hits me upside the head with a brick, but I don't have my word pad on, I can scribble something down. Bewdy! Bunny

The Rhyming Dictionary has been available on the poetry submissions page for over a year so that is not new, just the link to it. Many might not have been aware that it also links to Webster's. It hides as you enter the text of your poem but can be called up at any time by clicking the link next to the text box which says "Rhyming Dictionary" A program quirk requires two clicks the first time you do this.

Bob, this is a cool adition to a cool site. This little feature will save myself and the other writers here a lot of time sifting through notes ETC.ETC.ETC. I intend to use the feature regulary as many times when I am writing I jot things down to see how they go so this is invaluable.

Great work Bob!
