Rodeo Queen

Lipstick and makeup, smile through the breakup.
It’s just a part of the scene.
Sleep through the scenery, it’s all the same to me,
part of being a Rodeo Queen.
One night stands and country bands,
my eyes and mind grow dim.
In a single year, I realize my fear,
I’m only beauty to them.
Ephedrine was means to keep size zero jeans,
and sleeplessness for days on end.
Carpet tape in my hair so my hat would stay there,
while I rode Grand Entry again.
So after a year, I stepped down a tier,
and give the crown over to you.
The Vaseline on my teeth, to you I bequeath.
You’re next to pay your dues.
I’m giving you the flag, goin’ back to ridin’ drag
for my family’s ranch.
Live a normal life, be somebody’s wife,
maybe just get out and dance.
I crave simplicity, don’t want royalty.
Colorado is where I belong.
The ex-Rodeo Queen hands over her dream,
saddles up and pushes on home.
I never was a queen, my family didn't have the money or the time, nor did I have the interest. These girls really have it tough in their year as royalty, and they burn out fast. The status they have is aquired when they're in high school, and most don't know how to handle it.
This is dedicated to former Miss Rodeo Colorado and my good friend, Bonnie Jenkins.

Thanks all. Those girls really do have to stay REALLY thin. Bonnie told me that if she even got near to getting out of zeros in the time that she was queen, the committee would be on her like flies on a cow *ahem*. Anyway, there are some that aren't so picky. Course, I got a look at Miss Rodeo Missouri this year, not only was she not as pretty or bone thin as the others, but she couldn't ride a lick. Now, most of them can't. Some do like being Queen, I don't think that I would, though. The Committee is breathing down your neck for a year, I couldn't handle that. Jackie
Jackie, great poem. Hmmm, most of the girls here who were and are rodeo queens stopped wearing size 0 jeans in grade school. But...the rest sure fits their lifes. The schedule that has to be kept is mind-boggling!
I ran for Snow Queen - no horse but had to ride a car in a parade, in the winter. Now that was a feat in a half! I sat on the hood and hung onto mirrors and smiled through chattering teeth. I sure would have preferred a horse!
No matter how much they say its "not the looks, its the smarts, the abilities etc" they lie - that vasoline and carpet tape, getting the makeup just right and smiling pretty, its all part of the game.
I'm sure your friend was very touched by such a great poem!
*bowing graciously* Thank you, John. I'm a long way from royalty, and I'm really glad of that, but I appreciate your feelings just the same. Billy, no, darlin' I don't wear size 0 jeans. I wear a size 5. If I was in 0's, I wouldn't have any bone structure. LOL Jackie
I am glad that you were never a queen Jackie, if you were you would not have had the amazing experiences that you have had and you would not have so many great poem/tales to tell.
But between you an me, you are a queen here at MLM, a queen of cowgirl poetry!
