I've witnessed some cruel things in the course of my life. People can be cruel to people, but most of what I have seen is cruelty to animals.
I can save some of them, but I just can't save them all. I wish that I could. I also wish that some laws would change in the state of Wyoming. There aren't very many laws up here governing animal abuse. As long as there is water available and food on the property, there is nothing that anyone can do.
When Animals Cry
There is a sad, cold part of life,
that makes me question my worth,
when any living thing suffers
and lays broken in the dirt.
Is it really ignorance
that leaves these lives to chance?
Or is it that man doesn’t realize
that God judges us askance?
Do we think that He just looks down
upon His majesty
and doesn’t care that horse or dog
or other men have integrity?
We’ve scorned upon the right to live
for all that move and breathe,
and in our final days we’ll rest
in Hell for eternity.
No creature should have to suffer
our temper or violence.
No child or woman or man
should bear bad temperament.
I have seen the tears
in a beaten animal’s eye,
just before the last blow comes
and they are left to die.
I have bowed my head and turned away,
from the final rifle blast
and prayed that God will save my soul
when I will breathe my last.
The broken bones and shattered knees
and the blood that flowed so free,
I know is cause for reprimand
for man’s own violent greed.
I know that in the final moments
when God takes His stand,
The blood of many creatures
will be left upon our hands.

Thank you, Janet, for your kind comments. I'm not married to a vet, but I work closely with them as a trainer. It's tough to watch these animals suffer and know that the only thing that you can do is put them down. Jackie
Thanks, John, I feel the same way. Even though I am a rancher, and don't get way radical with animal rights, I do believe that they shouldn't be abused or treated unkindly. I'm even kind to my cattle. Jackie
Jackie, I love animals of any kind (Except spiders! I know they are not animals but , well....you know......) Anyway, if I were ruler of the world I would make it a crime that was akin to murder of a human to treat an animal badly. We the humans should take good care of our animal friends, in reality if it were not for them then we would not be here.
I'm not sure why there were writings about cockfights and abused animals in the same day, Billy. Maybe the world is just turning that way. It's a sad statement, isn't it? Jackie
Actually, the poem wasn't written for a dog, Robert. I put this dog's picture on here because she was abused, she's doing much better now. This was written for a horse. I couldn't bring myself to put the horse's picture on here. She was about 600 lbs, and about 15 hands. She had gotten herself cast in an empty water trough and had to be shot. It wasn't pretty. No animal deserves to live or die that way. Jackie
Thanks all, for your kind comments. Unfortunately, abuse is everywhere. David, your comment holds true, when small groups band together and make a loud noise, we can evoke change. That's what I plan to do. My cousin had worked for years to get an animal shelter built here in town. The animals that go there, are sometimes euthanized, but at least they have a shot at life. I'm going to pick up her torch and see that livestock gets the same chance. I know that there are national groups, SPCA, Animal Protection League and many others, that I can contact to get these laws passed in Wyoming. I don't want to go radical on it, I don't want to liberate animals, or anything like that, but I do want to see the basics given, food, water, shelter, and freedom from being beaten and abused. No animal deserves to go through that. Jackie
Do send this to SPCA and PETA (http://Peta.org) (which is a heart rending website to visit, I might add); I'm sure they will have many ideas where you can send this heartfelt poem that might touch more hearts (and move more mountains? or at least start the digging...) than a full blown, statistic-filled documentary.
This is a very powerful and well spoken poem, that hits deep to the soul. I send my poetry to a commuique that is actually read in Parliment by the people who make the laws and govern rights. Is there a medium there that you could send this poem and the piece you wrote above the poem to get that type of attention? Or maybe your local newspaper? Is there SPCA in your area, they might have an inside where you could be heard.
Abuse of any form angers me - against children and animals especially. I really become unglued. I volunteered at the SPCA in Alberta, it was a kill-shelter and it broke all our hearts to put down animals because of abuse or "just because they weren't wanted anymore."
That puppy breaks my heart. I agree Jackie, it does feel worse when the powers that be...arent' doing their job. When they aren't out there protecting the ones who cannot speak out for themelves.
I'm hoping that I can touch the hearts of the legislators to stop the abuse. The little dog in the picture was a "dumper", too. She was left on the ranch, starved, beaten and with some emotional damage that I'm not sure even a good home can fix. She's a purebred Border Collie. A neat little dog, but it's going to take a long time to get her back to normal. I'm hoping that Wyoming will have it's fill soon. I know that I've had mine. Jackie
It is terrible to have an animal suffer. It is good that we can help them to leave this world quickly and with mercy. It is hard on all caring people to see suffering, I too wonder why harm or hardships can be inflicted by selfish people, do they not have a conscience?
