The Skater
by Kay Lee Kelly
copyright 01-20-2002

Age Rating: 1 to 127

The Skater

Frozen Wildwood River, colored soft gray blue,
treacherous black ice, with water peeking through.

** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **

Wild wind has cleared away
fallen snow from the other day.
Miles along this frozen path
he travels with the winter’s wrath.

The skater sweeps and glides,
wind at his back, faster slides.
Stride and slide, duck a branch,
glides and stride, the skater’s dance.

Faster through the moonlit night,
lonely dance of grace and flight.
Glides and strides, jumps a log,
moon is dim now, winter fog.

Through the empty night he flies,
as the moonlight slowly dies.

Around the bend by the willow tree,
bending low he picks up speed,
graceful flying , rhythmic glides,
onto thin black ice he slides.

Open water waiting there,
faded sign declares, ’beware’.
Cracked crystal sheet closes tight,
cold water, black ice, empty night.

This poem gave me chills..many times I haven't heeded the danger signals along the way. Fortunately, I haven't paid the ultimate price either.
A great poem,
Nancy

If you can't feel the wind in your hair when you read this, you're not alive!! Feels like you're THERE!!! I felt cold and wet when I was done!!

This gave me the chills. When you started it by showing us the 'water peeking through', after that it was like hearing the 'jaws' music... :::shudder::

Did I read this somewhere before? It is very familiar. So unexpected, so deadly....Well done!
