Thursday to Saturday discomfort,
Could it be ghost of gall bladder long since removed?
Too much pain, too long,
As a nurse she had to give in and go to Emergency
Denial, denial, she couldn't be having a heart attack,
Too young, not the right symptoms, but they insisted she get into bed Stay overnight, let us check you.
Well trained staff, that's for sure, she had trained them herself
She knew how good they were
Family history of heart disease, stroke during angioplasty on Mother
Terrifying to think it was her lot too.
Thin, hardworking, smoking, very overburdened with other people's problems
Time to lie back, rest and heal. Let us take care of you.
Echo cardiogram, angiogram
Monitors and blood work
Whispers, puzzlement
Final decision...spasm of blood vessels (she is prone to migraine, one sister has Reynaud's disease, another arterial problem)
My sister lives 300 miles from me and 800 miles from my brother. She is younger than I am, we cannot give her up easily. We pack enoght clothing for a few days and drive on the winter roads, hoping the weather won't prevent us from reaching her......

She had a heart attack they say
Only it didn't seem that way
When the tests came out;
No blockage, no lesion, no plaque displayed
Doctors baffled about what to say
Stress is one culprit, there is no doubt.

Good nutrition, quitting smoking and lessen stress
May keep her heart from so much duress
And panic attack
Spasms of blood vessels cut off the flow
Such a thing can kill, and you never know
If or when it will come back.

Mike, our brother travelled two days
To give support in a personal way
And I went too
Just so glad to see her happy smiles
It was worth the stretch of all those miles
Affection proved.

So we hope she can prevent another bout
We'd find her hard to do without,
She's about as good as sisters get;
But I wonder if smoking will start again
When she decides it won't do her in
As it hasn't, as of yet.

Aw, c'mon now Betty.....you know very well that Barb is a totally diehard smoker, Type A personality. Reh-fit gives her an athletically fit rating. Spasm is a weird thing...but no blockages is a good thing......we were glad you came....I needed a big sister at that time!
Love ya, Bunny

The title of this write caught my eye because my name is Barb....and for the subject...I totally related. Thank you.

Thanks, Robert, she has tried numerous times to quit, maybe with less stress and loving support she will make it this time......

I live far from my family and little sister too, and I worry about both of my younger sisters. I'm glad she made it through, and I hope she gives up the cigs. I like the way you use narrative poetry to write about your life. I do the same thing. I call it autobiographical narrative poetry lol. Blessings, Barbara

Thanks for the chuckle, Sharon, unfortunately eating is a necessary evil. Thanks too Betty, I hope so too!

Wonderful ... hope your sister improves and ditches those cigs for good ... it isn't easy I know but it can be done ... I did it 27 year ago ... now if I could only stop eating :)

Lovely encouragement, Nan, she is a very special lady to so many people, who really need her. Thank you.
Thank you too, Terry. She seems to be doing fine, time will tell. I really appreciate your lovely comment.

With so much love and support, how can she *not* make it! :-)
