Cuttin' Prospect
by Jackie Moranty
copyright 01-28-2002

Age Rating: 4 to 127

Prospects are chosen carefully
for any kind of sport.
When it comes to money won,
no one wants to come up short.

So when it came to my first run,
I got to fork Old Don.
A sixteen year old turn back horse,
brought here from Texas by Ron.

They told me to just sit there,
keep my balance and hold on tight
‘cuz Old Don, he could move a cow
quicker than the speed of light.

So I went in and pulled one back
out of the herd of four.
I dropped the reins and grabbed the horn
and damn near hit the floor!

If I hung too tight with my legs,
Old Don would get to gunnin’
but if I’d let go, I was sure,
from under me, he’d be runnin’.

He’d push ‘em out ahead of us,
back past the timing line.
So I’d poke him with a spur
to keep the run looking fine.

I made it through the first run
without much trepidation,
but Old Don got real fired up
like he’d got fresh ammunition.

So we went and cut another one
and it wasn’t real long after,
that I managed to blow a stirrup
so I had to end that chapter.

Well, I got myself back situated
and went to try again.
In looking for a lazy calf,
I came up with one mean as sin!

I managed to ride this one out
for a minute, maybe two.
No one thought I’d make it,
boucin’ around like a kangaroo.

Finally I quit the herd,
and rode back out the pen.
Laughin’ like the devil inside,
feelin’ like I cheated death again.

I hadn’t had my balance,
the saddle was too big
the stirrups weren’t near short enough,
I was riding in Ron’s cuttin’ rig!

Old Don was working his hardest.
He gave me four good rides.
I rode him like a rag doll,
but I stayed on the top side.

I petted him when I stepped down
and I scratched behind his ears.
He looked at me like I was crazy.
He’d never seen that in his career.

His look actually seemed to say,
“Woman, you made me TIRED!
You’ll never make a cuttin’ prospect,
go on home, YOU’RE FIRED!”

I'm sad that you have not continued to post here. I'm glad you wrote all you did because I really enjoy this poem and everything else you have written. A lot of poets like to use large words, but I enjoy reading the way it is usually spoken. Your writing sounds comforting and I enjoy that! Anthony

Thanks, Ellen. Cutting is really fun. It's a new sport for me, I've done barrels, roped and all kinds of stuff in the past, but this cutting is something all together different. I love it! Jackie

I manage to ride a buck pretty good. This learning to cut is really getting after me, though. Especially in someone else's saddle. Jackie

Nan and Robert, I'm glad that you enjoyed the poem. That was a fun ride. I could get addicted to cutting if I did it a couple of more times. Robert, the Cowboy Dictionary is on it's way, I'm putting a few more words in as they come to me, then I'll post it for the world! Thanks to both of you, Jackie

Well, Bob, we were playing musical horses, so since I was only going to "fork" or ride Don for a short time, then Ron was going to turn back on him again, Traci took my mare and my saddle, I took Don with Ron's saddle, and Ron was riding his colt with another of his saddles on it. We figured that since I was just playing, and I'm a pretty stout rider, I'd do all right. Almost didn't work that way. Next time, it's MY saddle. I dont' care if it's only for a half hour. Jackie

Hey, Buckaroo, it sounds like you almost bit off more than you could chew, this time! I have a question, though... why didn't you put your own saddle on him?

Oh, and you wrote: "I got to fork Old Don." Do I need (or want) to know what that means? Heehee...

Nice job, girl... another winner.

Thanks, Terry! Jackie
