The Windbreak Pines
Straight silhouette against the sky,
Steadfast their task, a shield held high,
Unchanging in a close knit row,
Eighty years, they serenely grow.
Three miles away the bulldozers roar,
Cutting a path for roads, and more,
New houses for a growing plight,
Of families fleeing the cities blight.
How do I keep the cutters away?
I have worked on this night and day.
Eighty years, the trees earned the right
To stand and shelter us through the night.
Two miles closer the bulldozers roar,
Cutting a path towards my door.
The windbreak pines down by the gate,
Remain tall, proud, do they know their fate?
Unbroken silhouettes against the sky
Unwavering in their task, shield held high
Unchanging in a close knit row,
Eighty years and still they grow.
One mile away the bulldozers roar,
They are getting closer to my door,
And the glory of the windbreak pine,
Intertwine, majestic, a green growing shine.
Windbreak pines, old friends of mine
Maybe together, we hold back time.
Solid, impassive they hold their ground
Moaning wind is the only sound.
~
Today the bulldozers are still.
~
Unbroken silhouettes against the sky
Unwavering in their task, shields held high
Unchanging in a close knit row,
Eighty-one years and still they grow.
