Disposable Memory
by Betty Eskdale (Age: 63)
copyright 02-17-2002

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Time on my hands , you on my mind;
We were in love t’would be “for all time”
You said forever our love would last
I thought you meant it, the di was cast

Now I’m alone, you’ve someone new
Where have our dreams gone, are they with you?
How can you do that? Live out our dream
Picket fence, little house built by a stream

A dog, I bet, a flashy car, a woman by your side
Children in the future; my plans laid aside;
Good job, nice pay, vacation in the fall
We did the dreaming; you got it all!

I never thought I’d be a disposable memory
Paper cups, paper plates, plastic forks and knives
Cameras you can throw away but never people’s lives
I never thought I’d be a disposable memory.

I helped you dream the perfect life, I paid your way through school
I worked and planned and now you go and treat me like a fool
But you will find that justice comes, the piper must be paid
Quote Robbie Burns about men’s schemes, even the best-laid
{And he included mice, (like you)} aft gang a-gley,

An educated guy like you would know exactly what that means
You can’t walk on people, fate will intervene

I’ll recycle, I’ll recover, I will do just fine
I’ll dream new dreams, I’ll plan new plans, and these will be all mine

I’ll do just what I want to do, I’ll be who I want to be….
And I will let you always be my disposable memory

I refuse to be a disposable memory
Paper cups, paper plates, plastic forks and knives
Cameras you can throw away but never people’s lives
I refuse to be a disposable memory.

A little sad, but it shows how a wounded person regains strength.

Wow can I ever relate to this. Vivid imagery, A fantastic write . Amazing talent!

03-24-2003 Tammy Schaffer

Makes you stop and think. Great message.

This was great, Betty! I know that in our "fast food" and "instant gratification" society, people are disposable, like planned obsolescence....very meaningful in this era! Good one, little sis.

I really appreciate the comments and feelings of sharing that this piece has inspired, I love to come back to it often. We all have suffered and been treated as people of little consequence; those who have done this have no idea of the great value we have and it is their loss....

Disposable memories..been there and done that..a great read!

Wow! This is really powerful...it sounds like it would be a great song to me as well! Love isn't supposed to be disposable is it?!!! Lots of wisdom in this! Thank you for stopping by my page also!

Excellent. Perhaps you've discovered one of the real problems of today. With all the disposable things in our world, is it any wonder that people become disposable as well?

02-19-2002 Betty Eskdale

I hadn't thought of a song, Nan, wonder if we PnP people will ever collaberate?
Thanks too, Jeff, Karen, Bob,Kay Lee, Peggy, Bob,and David; I really am thrilled to get so many wonderful comments.
I see so many people disappointed in love, they don't grow together, they change but in different directions unfortunately.

This begs for music.... a terrific write, Betty.

Well said Betty!
I see your pain in every word, but I also see your message of inner strenght.I sound the comments of everyone else, WELL DONE!

'disposable memory ' these very words
cut to the core. This is a wonderful poem.
Excellent work.

02-18-2002 Bob Church

Betty, I can only echo David's sentiments. At the end of the day, the only disposable element will be his memory... then you'll know your triumph.

02-18-2002 Peggy Bertrand

Betty, this is a very sensitive poem with alot of insides showing. Thank you for sharing and letting your readers know life is always a second chance if we need to use it.

Thanks, Bob, I want people to realize that life can go on and be great, they need to take charge and not be victims.....
