A tale from the Tale Gazette – A job for Bert the Wolf.
by Bianca Boonstra
copyright 02-22-2002

Age Rating: 4 to 127

Bert the Wolf is feeling lonely. He has no friends to talk to. He is all alone. And when he feels so sad, he goes out at night. He walks through the forest, when all animals are asleep. He goes to the dark outer forest, and starts howling.

Bert the Wolf:
“Aouuu! Aouuu! I am feeling lonely…
Aouuu! Aouuu! I am feeling blue
Aouuu! Aouuu! I am a useless animal, with not so much to do
Aouuu! Aouuu! No one takes care of me
Aouuu! Aouuu! I have no one to talk to
Aouuu! Aouuu! So here I sit, crying
Aouuu! Aouuu! I have nothing else to do…”

Poor Bert. What he doesn’t know at that moment, is that in the Tale Forest, animals were searching for him. Why?

Early in the morning, Uncle Hank, the Dove received a letter in his post office. The letter was addressed to Bert the Wolf. It was coming from a far away forest, that Uncle Hank could see. The stamp told him that. But from whom that letter came? That was not written on the envelope. A mystery. He had to deliver the letter to Bert the Wolf, and found Bert’s house empty.

Uncle Hank: “Louis, have you seen Bert the Wolf somewhere?”

Louis the Fox: “No.”

Uncle Hank: “Do you have an idea where he could have gone?”

Louis the Fox: “I know, when Bert is feeling lonely, he goes to the dark outer forest, to howl a bit. I think he will be back before breakfast. It is early, you know.”

Uncle Hank: ”Yes, I know. But I have to open the post office in one hour. If I can’t deliver this letter to him, I have a major problem.”

Miss Starch came by, and had a great idea.
“We will wake Zoof the Rabbit, and ask him, to go to the outer forest, and get Bert back with him.”

Louis the Fox: ”That is the best suggestion, that I have heard. I will wake Zoof for you.”

Zoof the Rabbit was glad to have something important to do. He ran fast, and found Bert, sitting sadly on a large stone.

Zoof: “Zoof Zoof! I have important news for you.”

Bert the Wolf: Aouuu! Aouuu! Leave me alone. Can’t you see that I am lonely?”

Zoof: “Zoof Zoof! No time. Uncle Hank has a letter for you. He has to deliver it to you, before he opens the post office. You have to come. Quick!”

Zoof ran away, and didn’t wait for an answer.
Bert sighed, and starts to walk back home. When he arrived at his place, he saw a lot of animals gathered in front of his house. And Uncle Hank, with the letter in his mailbag.

Uncle Hank: “Here is the letter, Bert. It seems to be an important one.”

Bert opened the letter and starts to read:
“Dear Bert. I am here in the far away forest. I am happy. I won’t come back for a long time, and wanted to give you something to take care of. And that means you have a new job. I am assigning you, as the new owner of “The Talk House”. Make a nice place out of it, where all the animals can come to talk, and have a nice lemonade to drink. Your father, Willie the Wolf.
And in the envelope, Bert found the keys of “The Talk House”.

A smile, filled with happiness was on Bert’s face.
“Come on, we’ll go and see, if we can make it a nice place. Anyone who helps me, to remove the dust, will get a nice lemonade and a portion of chestnuts for free”

Louis the Fox and Zoof the Rabbit joined Bert, to help him clean.
The grand opening was a happy celebration, and for the first time in his life, Bert felt content…

Mister Owl: “And now, get to sleep in your nice warm beds. And remember: Close your eyes, and your little mouths. Goodnight!”

This is adorable and is just dying for pictures to go with it... I love this line, right after Zoof comes to tell him about the letter:"Aouuu! Aouuu! Leave me alone. Can’t you see that I am lonely?”

Silly woolf. :-)
