How Many Points Should You Give?
by Robert Betts (Age: 62)
copyright 02-25-2002

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Our authors need points to tell how well they are doing.

In the real world, performance is important. Publishers will not be bothered with works which lack quality. We hope here at PnP to publish our authors and also to help those who wish help. Point averages will help in this.

We welcome the new talent, truly we do and you should be able to see that in the comments you are getting from our authors.

Those who are rating everything they see with a '5' are not helping. Please Do! ONLY a PERFECT work should get a '5' and I can find numerous mistakes in many which have been so rated.

Those who have done this are upsetting the value of the rating system.

Another note: I realize that you likely have a backlog of works that you want to post here. Let me assure you, they are most welcome. However if you post all at once, my experience is that they will see few reads and comments. It would be better for you to post a few a day.

Those who have been here a while know I am very responsive, friendly and helpful. If you have any problems, like something went amiss, please email me.

The place is not perfect, but with the help of our members, I do my best. I can take criticism quite well so feel free to comment here or on any other of my notes or works.

thanks,

bob

Thank you first of all for accepting me into your site. I am only very new to poetry and am still battling along through the dark. For me this has been the best site i have looked upon so far and am pleased to be a part of it. Regards Jonathon Bywaters

Just a funny comment on the title here. The word 'NEW' in a title always fascinates me. Sure the work is new for a few weeks but this is almost three years old and it still says 'new'. I just thought I would mention this as kind of a joke. You'd be surprised how often in real life this actually comes up.
Does this site really belong to 'nonprofit Corp?'
I always that that you owned and operated this site. I was just curious.

Thank you for explaining it makes it easier to
understand.

Hmm... Well Jennifer, yes I did start the site. But really PnP now belongs to the Nonprofit Corp. I seek their advice and approval for all major changes here.

To explain Dixie's comment. She and her son were rating each other 10's and rating many of our excellent authors as zero's. The object of this was to place themselves on top. Their ratings were deleted and they were warned.

They continued to violate policy, especially looking for every loophole to misuse the site. They were eventually ejected from PnP with approval from the Board and CEO.

Well Bob I go along with what Peggy said about someone bringing your rateings down and not commenting on your poem. I got real upset after I got repremended for up rateings than someone went into my poems an my children an dropped the rateings any where from 1 to 1.6 and nothing is done about that. I do what you told me to do and if I can't rate it as good as other people than I won't rate it at all. I also leave a comment on every one I rate. Why don't the other''s out there do the same. I mean after all there suupposed to be proffessionals????? DIXIE LEE

Sorry for that oversight. I have noted in the State of the Site Report that there now is a daily limit of 5 in each category, stories, poems, recipes etc. I've noted that some posts are poor quality. Not good. I'm working on a method to separate these.

Bob I don't have a major problem with the ratings it is just that there are so many people contributing that a poem doesn't stay on the first page long enough anymore for poeple to read and rate the poetry. If you are going to use ratings for contests and anthologies we should have a way to keep them before the writers for a while longer.

Bob,

Thank you!!!!
I do like the new system better it covers more....
Originality a plus on it...
Good job of improving the sight.

Peggy

There is one negative. All who comment will have rated. Hence it is possible if the author is on the site a lot he could monitor and figure who rated what. But the possibility of rating without commenting helps confuse that.

The object of ratings to rate honestly. I can see who rated what, how. If I see the system being used to retaliate, I will simply delete the retaliating person's ratings.

Bob,

This new system of rating is neat.. I still think though you should leave comments before rating. On a piece.. or we shouldn't be allowed to post a rate if no comment... i didn't think it was possible.. Did one to find out.. That is why some of my poetry had 3 visit, 3, comments, 4 ratings.... Also sure that 4th no comment brought down the rating of the work.. just seems unfair... that way.. no comment seems cowardly... about their decisions on the ratings.. also leaves open pay backs as to say for those who post negatively comment structure of ones work alot. Other wise nice set up now...

Peggy

P.S. I'm ready for all the no comment ratings as of now....

07-07-2002 Robert Betts

The rating, Luke is simply the two numbers added together. 0-5 for Content + 0-5 for Execution

04-24-2002 Joey Dykehouse

Where di I get to write a poem at?

03-09-2002 Robert Betts

There is other other factor... Some have told me they rate all 5's so they encourage people... BUT, I ask... just WHO ARE you encouraging? The effect is to give high ratings to people they read. That is unfair to others and will result in their ratings being deleted to get back to a fair balance.

Ratings are tricky... Please just rate ALL works you read fairly so EVERYONE gets rated on an even basis.

Basically it boils down to giving all 5's is about the same as giving all 0's. The idea of ratings is to form a scale and that is impossible if all are rated the same.

03-02-2002 John Mcleod

Too true your words are Bob. Some other sites do not bother about the rating system too much and that gives the writers (Everyone) a false sense of what they have achieved. It is all too easy to join a new site and give high ratings in the hope that high ratings will be given also. It is far better to be critical and rate accordingly.
On a second note- Yes Bob, you are more or less doing all this yourself and a great job you are doing too. I started a website once and when people started submiting poems ETC.ETC.ETC It became a pain due to my limmited time. You are doing a great job in keeping this site up there with the best of them, Heck! We are the best!

John

Thank you so much for your warm welcome for us that are new to this site. I wish I had known of this site long ago. You have done a wonderful job here, and I to hope I'll learn all the ropes here soon!

02-28-2002 Lisa DiNunzio

Today is my first day here and I must say I really enjoy the make-up of this site. It looks as if there are many talented writters here.
I hope to be a asset to your prestigious web site.

I'll bet you've been busy with the addition of new writers. As always, you're doing a fine job and we probably don't tell you that often enough.

02-26-2002 Eileen Waldron

Thanks for the info, and my page is also now fixed...;-), sorry if I have been one of the newbies to rate wrong, I will be more careful to check things out, and thank you for the great job you do here and the opportunity to post among such fine people. I think you do a superb job, don't know how you manage alone.
