Slow Burn
by Dan Zuewski
copyright 03-01-2002

Age Rating: 18 to 127

You seem to think the wind blows for you
When the skies are clear
And the sun is shining
When you need that extra push
You think it's there because you need it
Because you feel helpless
Without a shove
Without a tug
Without a kick in the ass
You don't think you're capable
Of even just being yourself

Going with that flow
The mesmerizing
Tantalizing
Slow burning flow
That lets you believe in fate
And destiny
And that God knows the right way, you say
The path before me that lies open
Is open only because that's how it is
Because I'm there in the right place
For someone made sure of it

No, it was never me
Never was I the one who made the choice
Can't you see?
I can't decide
What else is there to life
Than making sure
Decisions are made before I leap?
It's not like I have control
I like to go with the flow, you know
Let it take me where it will
Let that wind blow me down
And stuff me into a tight place
With no room to move around

That's how it is, you know
When you don't know where to go
And why should I know?
I'm only human
I'm only me
And even that needs help sometimes
I'm just whoever seems right at the time
Show me the way, man
Show me the way
I want to be you
But I can't
So I guess I'll settle for being me
It's not like I have a choice, anyway

Fate is the wind that blows me
And I go where it takes me
So I have no thoughts to the contrary
Because that's how it's always been
And that's how it will stay
Because in truth
I think the world is better off
Without knowing the truth about me
That I could probably be something else
Because you know... there's only room for one of me
And if there were two different types of me
Something would have to give

Like a rainbow being pulled down
By the weight of the lack of gold
An empty sucking sound at the end
Right around the corner
And I feel the pull
I feel myself distending
Seeing life flash before my eyes
Like a crazy coming attraction
But this isn't a movie
This is reality
This is how it's supposed to be
This is my reality
And who I am
And where I need to be

So look out below
Be afraid of what you see
Here I come
Watch out for me
I'm not sure where I'll fall
It's all up to the wind, you know
The wind that blows me
Wherever and whenever
It's not like I have a choice
It's not like anything else
I've experienced
And I'm not sure
I'd want to experience
Anything else…

You think it’s supposed to be this way
But you’ve never known that it was wrong
Or did you…
And yet you refused to change?
Must be nice to not have to worry
About your next move…
I’d rather worry
Because at least I know
I could change it
Before it comes…

Though the words written here are nice, the length of this takes away from it. The reader finds themselves wondering when it will end and how many ways can you say the same things. Anthony
