Paperclips
by Dan Zuewski
copyright 03-03-2002

Age Rating: 13 to 127

I’m not sure if this is getting through to you
Not sure if you’re understanding what I have to say
I’m getting such a dead silence on the line
When you’re supposed to give me a sense
That you know what I’m doing is right
That you know I’d never try to hurt anyone
I’d never try to be anyone I’m not

So that’s the story
Slipping between these fingers
Between these lips
Silence in the falling paperclips
Words have all been thrown away
This is just a tale of a confused soul
Trying to find his way

With the world at odds with me
I wonder if you really see how hard I’m trying
To put all things together in my mind
Facets and faces and signs and places
People I’m supposed to be
Words I’m supposed to say
Yet I don’t know if you know what I’m saying here
I don’t know if you’ve left and gone away

This is the story
For all it’s worth to me
For all I’m worth to anyone but myself
Fingers falling like paperclips
Words that don’t understand each other
Confused in the soul sight searchlights
Trying to find the way

I guess I’m saying I’m still looking
Listening for the rain to fall
Ears to the ground waiting for horses
Waiting for a divine interpretation
To lift me up, lift me high, lift me higher
Out from these depths
In which I’ve settled

That’s all there is to this story
I’m not sure if it’s getting through
For the most part it’s not yet finished
Just so thin between these paperclips
But it’s good enough to show you
To get your opinion on who I am
To sacrifice the security of silence
To see if you’re still listening

Hello?

I really liked this poem. The form is good for this because the writer has feelings running all over the place and this seems to jump with emotion! Good write! Anthony
