I stood there amidst the swirling grey cloud of dust,
trying to understand why.
People were running and screaming and crying,
I was but a shadow of a passerby.
Looting, shooting, bloody faces,
crimson tears covered most I seen.
Empty strollers, burning buildings,
a hellish chaotic nightmarish scene.
Sidewalks cracked like pecan brittle,
gaping smiles of a world gone under.
Rolling soot bellowing ever closer,
followed by a cry of distant thunder.
Stark raving madmen pulling out their hair,
women gathering their babes as they run run run.
I see no human threat around the corner,
there is no one standing there with a gun.
All this I take into my consciousness,
in just a second, a mere blink of the eye.
Just in time to look up at the darkness,
that a second ago was a pale blue sky.
Where is the military, the National Guard,
where is the military playing hero?
I suppose there's not enough time for warning,
just one second to grasp I'm five seconds from ground zero.
I stood there amidst the swirling grey cloud of dust,
trying to understand why.
The world that I knew suddenly ceased to be,
I am but a memory of a passerby.
