A Redwood Tree
by Eileen Waldron
copyright 03-10-2002

Age Rating: 7 to 127

I gave this as an assignment in our club.
If you were a tree what kind would you be.;-)

The following first part, are facts from the
Sequoia National Park site. I fell in love with
these trees.

Giant Sequoia and Redwood Trees
(Sequoiandendron giganteum)
Facts
The Giant Sequoia trees are the largest
living things on earth, because they are among
the tallest and are the biggest in width. The Coastal
Redwoods of California are taller than the Giant
Sequoias. However, the sequoia trees have much
larger trunks and branches in width.

Fastest growing trees in the world. Biggest in
width. Bark as much as 4 feet thick, 50 feet long,
branches 100 feet off the ground. The trees have
survived for 2,000 or 3,000 years some even longer.
Some of the largest trees measure 35 feet
in basel diameter and up to 300 feet in height.

The tallest standing giant sequoia is 311 feet tall
and the tallest redwood is 367 feet tall. They can grow
up to 1 to 2 feet tall per year until its between 200 to 300
feet high, then like people they grow out.The tree grows
at elevations of 6,500 feet.
--------------------

How could I be any other tree, it was love
at first sight when I stood next to the
Redwood for the first time and looked up.

It went on forever, my head couldn't go
back far enough. I couldn't see the top it
got lost in the sky, so moved I had to cry.

I sat in the hushed park and let god talk
to me through the glory of his Creation,
wondering if they have these in any other
nation.

They house Birds of every kind and color
animals large and small. Other great trees
are dwarfed, but form a canopy over the
park and look like shrubs in comparison.

As a Redwood tree touching the sky
I would be in heaven long before I die
So, since that's where I want to be
I'd have to be a Redwood tree.

I want to be a Christmas tree.
So all the kids would love me.
The parents would like me too,
but I could still grow by you!

Redwoods are great big trees and they are beautiful. This was a nice read! Anthony
