It is dark in the Tale Forest as Bert the Wolf awakes. He feels strange. Normally he sleeps all night and wakes up when the sun is coming up in the morning. But not this time. He listens to the rain that is falling down from the sky. He feels a tremendous pain in his left jaw. The pain is so awful that he cries it out: “Aouu Aouu!”
It is from the howling of Bert the Wolf that Miss Starch awakes from her sleep. She never heard Bert howling like that. She steps out of her bed and goes out of her house, to take a look what is wrong with Bert.
When she arrives at “The Talk House” she sees that more animals have gathered to see what is wrong. Louis the Fox and Uncle Hank as well as the Beaver brothers.
Uncle Hank: “If Bert has a tooth ache we have to find someone to look at it. A dentist is what we need.”
Louis the Fox: “Then we don’t have to ask Doctor Horse for his advice. He is a doctor, not a dentist.”
Miss Starch replies: “We do have to ask the Doctor. I once have heard him say that he has a cousin who is dentist in the Outer-Tale Forest. Doctor Horse can write him a letter and ask him to come. I assume that Uncle Hank will deliver that letter as soon as is possible.”
Uncle Hank agrees and all the animals are going to the Doctors house. Bert goes with them, silently crying from the pain he feels in his jaw. “Aouuu!”
The Doctor was awake already and waited for the animals to come. They told him the story briefly.
The Doctor: “Bert, dear friend, come to me and let me see your tooth.”
Bert does what the doctor says and the Doctor takes a look.
The Doctor: “Ah… I see what the problem is… you have a little hole in that tooth. I will write to my cousin…Betty Zebra, to come. She has the appropriate things to fill that hole, and when she is done, the pain will be gone in a few hours. For now, I’ll give Bert something against the pain, so we can sleep a bit.”
All animals agreed with the Doctors conclusion. Miss Starch was so friendly to bring Bert back home to “The Talk House”, where he went back into bed. He still felt strange, now from the medicine that the Doctor gave him. Miss Starch stayed with him until he fell asleep. Then she went home, straight to her own bed.
Uncle Hank was the only animal that had to go to work early. His job was to deliver the mail for Betty Zebra in the Outer-Tale Forest. It took him an hour to get there. For him it was no problem, while he didn’t like to see his friend in pain like that.
Fortunate for Uncle Hank, Betty Zebra was already awake. She read the letter, gathered her things and went to the Tale Forest, accompanied by Uncle Hank.
“Aouu! Aouuu!” Again Bert the Wolf started to howl again. His tooth was aching bad. Fortunate for him, help had arrived. Uncle Hank knocked on the door, to give him the message that he was expected to come to the Tale Forest Hospital.
“Aouu! Yes…I’m coming with you. I can’t stand the pain anymore. My whole jaw is hurting.” Bert babbled and Uncle Hank only grinned. “Well, dear friend, you’ll feel much better when she is done with you.”
Twenty minutes later, Bert walked out of the hospital with a smile on his face. The animals were pleasantly surprised to see Bert happy again.
Bert the Wolf: “She is really a nice dentist. I feared that my tooth had to be removed. She said that there was a little hole in it, that had to be fixed. It did hurt a little bit but when she was ready, she showed me what she has done to my tooth. It is looking like new. And see what I have?”
Proudly he showed a new toothbrush.
Bert the Wolf: She showed me how to brush my teeth. Now I have to do that at least two times a day. I have to go now, to open “The Talk House”. I offered her a free lemonade and food, that is the least what I could do to repay her….”
All the animals envied Bert for his brand new toothbrush. They went to the hospital, hoping to see Betty Zebra, and also receiving a toothbrush for themselves. But Betty had not much time… she had to be back home in time, while she had other patients to treat in the Outer Forest. The Doctor however managed to ask Betty for a tooth control day in the Tale Forest. Then she would be able to take the time for all the animals to check on their teeth.
Since that day, there is a dental service twice a year in the Tale Forest. They all like Betty, most of all for the new tooth brushes she brings with her when she comes…
Mister Owl: “And now, get to sleep in your nice warm beds. And remember: Close your eyes, and your little mouths. Goodnight!”
