A HOAX virus
by Robert Betts (Age: 62)
copyright 05-31-2001

Age Rating: 10 to 127

With all the virus going around there is yet one "new" twist.

Take a Windows file which has a rather suspicious icon and a suspicious name which is vital for your system to function and inject fear of virus into people who don't understand very well. Get them to suspect this file and delete it, much to their detrement.

That is the latest warning I got. Seems a file named SULFNBK.EXE might be infected and you are advised to delete it.

DON'T DON'T DON'T

This file is VITAL for your system to recognize long filenames.

If you go to this website
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html

AND AND AND read that article CAREFULLY... you will see clearly that this is a hoax.

DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE... AND WHEN ANYONE SUGGESTS IN THE FUTURE THAT YOU DELETE ANY FILE IN ANY WINDOWS DIRECTORY, THINK, THINK, THINK.

Windows files can be very sensitive, never delete any unless you are absolutely certain that there is a problem.

Also, I just ran a virus check on my entire system using the very latest virus updates I got from Norton today... and I had received an email supposedly containing this virus... result? 100% clean !

Now, I do not necessaarily blame the person warning me. Most likely she/he hasn't a clue that this is simply another virus hoax.

Oh and speaking of HOAX here is yet another. This one is quite well known and if you check dogpile.com you will see many references to this being "The Nigerian Scam" Whenever anyone offers a "get Rich Quick scheme" BEWARE !

The Nigerian scam has many forms but it always involves huge sums of $ being transfered into your account for "good" reasons. As you are "conned and "sucked in" they start asking for money. Another vital part of this scam is making you think you are acting in an illegal manner. This way they are assured you will be afraid to contact any authorities.

This is the exact email I got and it is another Hoax, but dangerous in that it will involve you little by little then suck you dry:

E-mail:
Date: 31st MAY 2001

ATTN: THE PRESIDENT/CEO

It is my pleasure to contact you for assistance and business co-operation.
I know the content of this letter might be surprising to you. But I assure
you that every word of it is true. Even though we hardly know each other I
believe you can help me.

Meanwhile, I got your contact in the World Business Directory.

I am the President of a special task force in charge of the sales of
petroleum products in The Federal Republic of Nigeria in West Africa. My
office monitors the sales and lifting of crude oil and petroleum product
by foreign dealers. With the cooperation of my assistant and head of the
audit committee attached to the task force, I have successfully saved
about US$40 million.

This money is as a result of allocation of excess crude oil to the foreign
dealers, which has been sold but which money is not entered in the
financial statement of my task force. This money is now lying unclaimed in
the account of the task force, known only to my partners and me involved
in the excess allocation.

However, the legislators of the new democratic Government of my country
have set up a panel to look into the past activities of some government
companies and parastatals. We do not want the panel to discover the money
we saved.

We cannot lodge this money into our private bank account. In my country,
public servants are not permitted to operate any account in excess of
$500,000 US Dollars. Now the idea is to have a foreign partner whom the
sum will be transferred to. We have concluded arrangement to transfer this
money to your private account if you permit us to use it.

All you have to do is to give us your private address, phone and fax lines
and banking particulars. I will send you the details of the transfer and
necessary document as soon as you provide them.

If you can assist us transfer this money out before the panel starts work,
we will give you 20% of the amount. You will keep the remaining sum for us
pending our arrival to your country. We intend to invest 50% of the sum in
business. With your knowledge and past experience your advice will be
highly needed for the investment. We would want to know the lucrative
business areas in your country we can invest on with the 50% of the sum.

Don't worry about any problem in this business. I assure it is safe and no
risk is involved. No other party is aware of the sum from the excess
allocation except my partner and me. However, this transaction should be
secret and confidential.

We awaits your reply on your participation or not, so that we can contact
another person. Time is of great essence to us.

For any further information reach us through this E-mail:

DR. WILLIAMS JABARI

Thanks for the warning. But I think I'm too late. This is three years later so I think that this thing could have already happened so...I'll be going now.

This was a very informative article Bob (Which I expected it would be)and I found it highly interesting. You always seem to find the right information to write about.

Your essay came a little too late for me, luckily, I was able to find a link and upload it again so my files are okay. I usually look into a hoax, but this one sounded so real! So I will never jump...i will never jump...i will never jump!

And please, everyone, always check places like Urbanlegends.com, symantec.com, mcafee.com, microsoft's website... etc! before forwarding on these "virus warnings", "petitions" and "horror stories" (like the kidney-robbers-who-leave-you-in-a bathtub-full-of-ice one... sheeeeesh).
Thanks for putting this info up, Bob.
