The taste of pain is bitter, laced
with caustic flavor-spurs that cling
to tender ridges of our day;
we wince as we absorb their sting.
We must dilute its pungency;
so bit by bit, we let it fall
within the swell of life itself,
where brightly-swirling currents call.
The pain's still there, but now we find
its bitterness diffused by light.
The choice is ours: to let it go,
or grow accustomed to its bite.

This evolved from an email story about a monk who put a tablespoon of salt in a glass of water and gave it to his student to drink...
"This is the taste of pain".
Then he put a tablespoon of salt in a lake and asked if the student could still taste it....

Okay, I am in awe of your ability to take such profound thoughts and fellings and express them so perfectly! I've found that it is only within us that we can choose to suffer from our pain, or learn from the shadows and darkness...until we can feel the sun again....and emerge even stronger.
WOW! Your words about pain ring so true..I've finally learned that although I carry the bitterness and hurt inside, I can make a choice not to visit the place that it dwells unless I really want to. Fantastic poem!

This is a very good poem with valid points to think about. I especialy like this one as I can relate to it so well, yes we can all override pain but do we want to? In my oppinion it all depends on the strength of the persons will to succede, it is all to easy to succumbe to the ever pleasing medication that washes away the pain. Pain can be our friend if we let it be, the bodys natural ability to overcome pain is tremendous, learning how to use it is the hard part.
You can turn inward and focus on your pain, or you can open yourself to life and put it in perspective...Interesting thoughts, and i like the images

What if we can't find those currents? If the bank is too steep, how do we find the strength to climb down? Sometimes freefall seems a terrifying option. Lots to think about...
