Jacqueline Anastasia
Herds roam the plains,
Search for sustenance,
Following ageless instincts of life
While leery of death stalking.
Standing tall with pride
Walking slowly, ponderously…
Wary of strangers, of odors unfamiliar
Of lurking dangers
Permeating senses.
All gathered
Sensing something amiss,
Something transpiring on the empty plains
In their large, uncomplicated world.
A single cow bellows in her pain
Birth is imminent, pain encompassing.
Straining with her effort
With sudden rush of fluids
Soaking Mother Earth,
Pushed hard, tail extended,
Her voice screams her pain.
She strains one last time,
And onto the ground falls
A cloudy membrane filled with life.
Rending the sac full of new life.
She cleans her newborn.
She breaths his scent and bonds him forever
To her Mother"s love.
Rising to legs too rubbery to stand
The calf makes the effort to bawl and rise.
Instinct tells him to stand, to walk, and run
Means life or death.
Rising, he walks to his mother and nuzzles her teats.
He drinks his fill of life sustaining goodness,
His happiness complete.
Moving forward, ever forward
The herd again moves on
To more grass, more life,
And more danger in their quest for peace.
Herds roam the plains,
Search for sustenance,
Following ageless instincts of life
While leery of death stalking.
Standing tall with pride
Walking slowly, ponderously…
