Beneath an ashen sky marbled with streaks of gold
in a deep rut resembling a clown's frowning face
there stands a crooked picket line of tattered white flags
embossed with symbols of green eyelashes.
The flags are harassed by a bone-chilling wind
forcing them to move in a slow serpentine rhythm.
Surrounding the rut
is a muddy, blood soaked ridge
where a hovering silver flute
wails with the passion of a crime victim's grief
after having played ten choruses of taps.
Then an alarm clock explodes in my head
and the battlefield from my journey beyond the sandman's looking glass
collapses into my pillow for another intermission,
having surrendered to the distraction
of TV news, breakfast and the endless lesiure cannibals.
None of which ever prevents
the ghostly, decapitated warriors of my torments
from arising out of their tombs of forgiveness
where they refuse to stay buried.

Powerful and tormenting nightmare ~ "prevents the ghostly decapitated warriors of my torments from rising out of their tombs of forgiveness where they refuse to stay buried."

Not an easy subject ~ have a feeling that it isn't going to leave me easily ~ "refuse to stay buried"! Well done. DAWN in UK

This is a powerful write. Your imagery moves and breathes...this is awesome!

Your poem is striking in its dark nature. Paying attention to dreams and visions that refuse to die are life lessons to be learned.

Outstanding imagery here, William!
The overall atmosphere is starkly defined...
my mind is jolted by the flags with "green eyelashes" in a "serpentine rhythm"...the "tombs of forgiveness"....
I also love those "endless leisure cannibals"!
It feels to me like a soldier's nightmare, yet it can also apply to other torments.
Great work!
Lary

William, alot is going on in this poem and the images conjured up in the words you have painted a picture of evil that the world would understand.
