Candy Hearts
by Lyle Berry (Age: 61)
copyright 04-14-2002

Age Rating: 13 to 17

How bitter you are
Hate you mask so well
Most of the time
Lashes out
Smites me in a moment
To flush me from my realm of, at best
Pseudo-security
Back to where I usually linger
In vague uncertainty

How bitter you are
Love I seek in you
All of the time
Flares up
Only in passing
Like warmed-over feelings that were
But aren’t now
They are no longer in you
And are only hurting me

How bitter you are
To hold on and pretend
Some of the time
God’s truth
You need me and hint
That birds will twitter love ballads
In treetops and
Candy hearts will read: “Be Mine”
And “I Love you” always

good poem executed well with candy heart metaphors.

Words sometimes are just that, mention love
and you get 25 different reactions, as always,
this is one of the best.
