Wink Martindale is SOME guy!
By Emily Jean Belacuzco
I dunno… I guess I just like him. I mean, just look at the man! Every fiber of his being is dedicated to saying ‘trust me’. Who wouldn’t think of him as a brother or that best friend who you really liked when you were a kid, but moved away when his father got transferred to Nova Scotia? I read somewhere that he’s ranked second in popularity among daytime television personalities among female non-high school graduates between the ages of 35-70, right behind the master, Bob Barker!
In many ways, he’s cut from the same cloth as Bob Barker, and we all know how impressive he is. Now, I’m not suggesting that any of Wink’s numerous quiz shows were The Price Is Right or anything, but just the sheer number of times Wink got to walk into producer’s offices to audition ought to tell you that the man is popular! The guy’s had like a hundred jobs in the last 20 years!
Don’t get me started about his hair. Do you suppose he and Bob Barker get it done by the same hair stylist? Bob’s hair is white now (I’m sure he got it dyed just so he wouldn’t look like Wink Martindale’s twin brother), but other than that, his hair and Wink’s are identical. Talk about your coincidences!
Did you know that Wink’s autobiography, Winking, is out? It’s bound to be at the top of somebody’s chart, even if it’s only mine. Its got over 200 photos from his personal archives of guests such as Elvis, Mathis, Manilow, Midler and others. Naturally, when I read the book jacket, I thought they were talking about the celebrities’ pictures, but Elvis Patterson, Buster Mathis, Brenda Manilow and Hymie Midler are nice-looking people, especially standing next to Wink! Do you know that he personally signs every book he sells through his personal website? Strange though… no one has ever written a biography about him. Maybe I’ll do that, I’m sure it’d be a hit.
Not many people know that Wink grew up in Jackson, Tennessee. I think that’s very interesting, because he doesn’t seem to have any southern twang at all. Maybe he studied with Bob Barker’s voice coach… In any event, it’s served him well because when you watch his shows or listen to his radio program. I defy you to listen to him and say, “Now that boy sounds like he comes from Tennessee!” His daily radio show The Music of Your Life isn’t carried where I live, so I listen to it on the internet. He has a very popular feature on there called “It’s All In A Name” where people can find out where their name came from and how popular it is, and other such interesting facts… I keep hoping my name will be played, but so far I haven’t had any luck. I’ve written to him about a hundred times or so, asking him to do my name, but I guess he probably gets so much mail that he hasn’t got time to read it all.
Well, I could go on and on... If you get a chance, watch a few of his shows… I know you’ll be as impressed as I am. In fact, he’s so good, I’d have to say he’s almost as good as Bob Barker.
