The Furthest Shade of Grey

The years have worn his features thin;
he's hunched upon the weathered bench,
ignoring winds and sea-lashed spray.
A chill begins to glaze his bones.
His frail-edged thoughts retreat to days
when children's voices pebbled through
warm-scented halls and rumpled rooms.
A trembling sigh escapes his lips.
He drained their love to fuel his climb;
he strode across chrome-powered peaks
on shreds of crayoned Daddy-hugs
and all the moments in between.
He knows the final tally's taken,
wonders what the count will be.
He sees a solemn finger beckon
past the furthest shade of grey.

Oh HOW DO YOU DOOOOO THIS? I'm sitting here, balling my eyes out for the fate of some non-existent person. Or at least, I'm hoping he's non-existent. I pray each day I wake that I don't take my children or their love for granted. I take time out from everything else to make sure I've enough left for them. I once heard a talk about beans and golf balls and trying to fit them in a jar with rice. The Golf balls were the important things in life, our needs, the things we can't live without. The Beans were our wants, our desires, and the things that make life nice. The rice was fluff, the extras, the time consuming little nothings that really don't make a difference. The jar is our life and we were shown how important it is to prioritize. :)
Here's the lesson. If we fill our jar with the little nothings, there's not enough room for the beans let alone the golf balls. If we put the beans first, then all the rice will fit in... but none of the golf balls. IF, however, we put the golf balls in first... THEN the beans... THEN the rice, it all fits with room to spare.
Anyway... this just made me think of that talk. Hugs.
A powerful and thought-provoking piece....perhaps the finger beckons sooner than we know. This has such a wonderful flow to it as well, you never miss a beat!
Gosh, thank you all for such wonderful reactions...
I wasn't sure about this one, and it's very humbling to know it speaks to the heart...
Bless you!

Throwing away your children's love in order to climb the ladder of greed's success..how sad. In the end we only get what we have given..thought provoking poetry at its best.
