The Tales of the Tale Gazette –“Don’t spit on trees…they’ll die!”
by Bianca Boonstra
copyright 04-27-2002

Age Rating: 4 to 127

Far away in the Tale Forest, near the border of the Outer forest, there stands a lonely house. It is the house of Coco and Conchita Lama. Coco and Conchita lived all their lives in that house. They were born there. When they were old enough, their parents went away, back to their old home in the Outer Forest. Coco and Conchita wanted to stay, living there together.

They only had one habit… spitting. Their mother used to send them outside, to spit on a lonely tree that was standing in their field. They made games out of it. So the days went on and on…

The tree got sick and couldn’t handle all that spitting anymore. In the middle of the night the tree sighed and fell down. Right on the rooftop of Coco and Conchita’s house. Boy…those two were glad that they decided to sleep in the open air that night. If they didn’t, it could have been bad.

Coco: “What do we have to do now?”
Conchita: “I don’t know.”
Coco: “It was our favorite tree to spit on. Why did he go down?” He spitted on the tree again, like he was used to.

Conchita: “I don’t know! What I do know is that we need help. We don’t have a house anymore. Where do we sleep when the rain comes?”

Coco: ”I don’t know!”
Conchita: “Let’s go to sleep, we’ll decide what to do in the morning.” Now she spitted on the tree.
Coco: “Good idea.”

They slept for a couple of hours and got awake by the early morning sun.

Coco: ”What a mess. I have to get help.”
Conchita: “We’ll go to “the Talk House”, maybe there are animals there who can help us.”
Coco: “Good idea.” And he spitted on the tree.

They went away, for their walk to “The Talk House”. Now and then they took time, to eat a bit of the fresh grass that they found on the sides of the road. Finally, after an hour walking they arrived at “The Talk House”. They entered.

Bert the Wolf: “Well, who do we have here? That is a long time ago! How is life for Coco and Conchita these days?”
Coco: “Bad.” He looked around, to find something to spit on.
Bert the Wolf: “Spitting only in our wastebasket, Coco”.
Coco: “Thank you”. And he spitted in the wastebasket.
Bert the Wolf: ”Now tell me what has happened…I’ll make you two a lemonade.”

Conchita started to tell Bert all what had happened that night. She told him too, that her mother had taught them to spit on that tree. Then she cried…
Bert couldn’t stand to see animals cry. He said: “I’ll be gone for a few minutes, to talk to some animals that can help you. When you have to spit, use the wastebasket.”
The Lama’s sat silently on their places and Bert went on his way.

The first animal that he found on his way was Mister Owl. Mister Owl had knowledge of trees and plants. He talked to Mister Owl and Mister Owl agreed to go with him, to see what caused the illness of the tree.

Then he found the Beaver Brothers. Ed and William had their own repair shop, with all the necessary tools, to repair the Lama’s house. They promised to gather their tools and come to “The Talk House” when they had everything they needed.

Half an hour later, the automobile of the Beaver Brothers was loaded with tools. They went to “The Talk House” to pick up Mister Owl for the ride. The other animals had to walk.

Coco and Conchita were glad that they found help. They almost danced on the road home.
Ed and William arrived first with Mister Owl in their automobile. Mister Owl got out, walked to the tree and started his research.

Mister Owl: “I see… That is the problem.”
Coco: “Please tell us…”
Mister Owl: “Your mother taught you to spit on the tree. What she didn’t know is that the spittle of adult lama’s consists acid. It didn’t matter when you two were young. But when you grew older, your spittle became dangerous for the tree. The acid killed the tree. Learn this my friends: use the wastebasket to spit in, but don’t spit on trees anymore.”

Coco and Conchita promised to spit in the wastebasket from that day on. They received a nice wastebasket from Bert the Wolf, for their house.

In the mean time, Ed and William removed the tree from the rooftop and with help of Bert and Coco they managed to repair the house.

Right after dark, the repair work was done. It was too late for Ed, William and Bert to go home…even Mister Owl decided that going home in the dark was dangerous. They decided to go home at dawn.

Coco and Conchita – happy as they were offered the other animals a place to stay in their home for the night. They were thankful for the help that the other animals gave.
They both preferred to sleep in the open that night, counting the stars.

The next day, the Beaver Brothers left, together with Bert and Mister Owl. They had breakfast first, created by a happy Conchita.
With the promise to stop by soon, they left… leaving a thankful Coco and Conchita behind.

Since that day, Coco and Conchita only used wastebaskets to spit in… because they know what happens when they spit on trees.

Mister Owl: “And now, get to sleep in your nice warm beds. And remember: Close your eyes, and your little mouths. Goodnight!”
