Flowers in Ice
by Laryalee Fraser (Age: 68)
copyright 05-07-2002

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Their petals have been numbed by spikes of frost
that sliced through veins and drained the colors, left
their edges torn, their inner essence lost
forever. Healing hands, though strong and deft,

cannot revive the buds that should have bloomed.
The angels writhe with every blow that's driven
when innocence is broken and entombed
before it knew the song it had been given.

Each time we fail to heed the fractured calls
or choose to feign our ignorance instead,
the heartbeat of a frozen petal falls
and melts in tears of softly muted red.

The desecration claws at heaven's sky
each time a tiny flower whimpers "why?"

(Dedicated to all the innocent children....)

This is a very good poem. The feelings expressed are deep and yet easy to relate to.
